This week, District 8 sent our Security Threat Group (STG) Investigators to the Midwest Gang Investigators Association’s national gang conference in Bloomington, Minnesota. The team includes Residential Manager Chuck Severs, and Residential Officers Rigoberto Rodriguez-Infante, Jacob Rupe, and Kevin Suchomski.

At the conference, they will learn from experts on topics such as Gangs in Corrections, Investigating Gang Violence, Using Technology to Analyze Gang Crimes, and Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.

In their daily roles, our STG Investigators gather intelligence and conduct interviews that inform classification and housing decisions, while also collaborating closely with other DOC staff and law enforcement. We are proud of this active and motivated team and look forward to the new tools and insights they will bring back to our operations.

Congratulations to Food Service Coordinator Linda Kruse who is retiring next week. Linda did an amazing job for us throughout her career. Residential Manager Chuck Severs, shared the following:

I first met Linda Kruse a little over two decades ago, when we were both working in the Des Moines County Jail's kitchen. She was the Cook and I was the Assistant Cook. I learned two things from Linda right away. What it means to work hard, and what it means to take pride in your work. Two things that aren’t always easy in an occupation that is at times --- underappreciated. She has carried those two qualities each day for the past 19 years while leading the kitchen operation at the Burlington Residential Facility. She found an amazing balance between quality and cost control, and did both with a great attitude. We will miss her at BRF.

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), held April 19–25, 2026, is an important time to honor survivors, promote legal rights, and advocate for services that foster healing.

Last week, Asst. Director Patrick Lacy, PPO Supervisor Colby Kreiss, Community Treatment Coordinator (CTC) Christin Munson, and CTC Lindsay Epperson represented District 8 at the 2026 NCVRW commemoration in Des Moines. The ceremony honored Iowans who lost their lives to violent crimes in the past year and featured a moving story from a survivor.

In our District, six people lost their lives to violent crimes in the past year. To honor them, six flowers from the event have been kept on display at the Ottumwa Residential Facility.

We are fortunate to have CTC Epperson on staff as she is highly trained and dedicated to helping victims navigate the system.

Additionally, all of our staff work hard everyday to keep our communities safe by providing clients with the tools they need for success. Their work makes a meaningful difference and helps prevent future victimization.

Since 1981, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) has challenged the Nation to confront and remove barriers to achieve justice for all victims of crime. During NCVRW, we recognize the accomplishments of the victims’ rights movement and reflect on how far we have come.

Every April, The Office of Justice Programs, Office for Victims of Crime, leads communities throughout the country in their annual observances of NCVRW. In 2026, we are observing with the theme:

Listen. Act. Advocate.

Join us in honoring this week by recognizing the strength of survivors and the importance of advocacy.
