It was an honor to join Mayor Read & the Council for this Proclamation. Thank you for always prioritizing mental health as health!

Tonight, Mayor Catherine Read presented a proclamation recognizing May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month in . Human Services Director Lesley Abashian, members of the city’s Community Response Team (CRT), and Dr. Robyn Mehlenbeck from the GMU Center for Community Mental Health.

One in five Americans faces a mental health challenge each year, often in silence. Mental health affects everyone, yet stigma persists. supports the national effort to end that stigma and promote mental wellness across our schools, homes, workplaces, and community.

Mental health is health. Just as with physical well-being, the city is committed to supporting access to care and resources. Our understanding of mental health continues to grow, and we remain dedicated to applying that knowledge.

Remember: mental health challenges are not always visible. Trauma from poverty, violence, crime, substance abuse, incarceration, or homelessness can all contribute to mental illness. We must foster compassion and advocate for greater awareness, prevention, and treatment.
