Yesterday, celebrated ten of its members, alongside one of our Fairfax County Police Department members, as they graduated from the VCU Paramedic Program.

They graduate after eight months of hard work and commitment that included nearly 1,400 hours of classroom instruction, field training, and hospital clinicals.

Congratulations, VCU Class 14!

A special shout out to all members of EMS Training for the countless hours of instructing and mentoring these future paramedics.

House Fire • Fire Box: 430-05 • Fire Station 30, Merrifield, A-Shift • Providence District

On September 3, at 3:27 p.m., responded to a house fire at the intersection of Glenbrook Road and Santayana Drive in the Mantua area. Units arrived to find a single-family home with smoke showing from multiple sides. Crews quickly located a fire in the kitchen extending to the walls and ceiling.

Crews conducted a search and checked for extension. The fire was confirmed out.

Four occupants safely evacuated prior to arrival. There are no civilian or firefighter injuries.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Technical Rescue – Suspended Worker • Fire Box: 19-44 • Station 19, Lorton, C-Shift

On August 31, at 1:46 p.m., responded to a technical rescue call near the intersection of Richmond Highway and Armistead Road in Lorton. A worker became suspended approximately 40 feet below ground during construction operations.

Upon arrival, firefighters initiated rescue operations involving multiple technical rescue units. Command lead a coordinated response with rescue, safety, and landing groups teams to execute a safe extraction. Due to the depth and confined nature of the location, crews established a tower ladder as a backup plan while preparing the primary extraction method.

The worker was secured in a Stokes basket and raised to ground level using a crane. The worker was removed and transported in non-life-threatening condition.

Equipped with basic life support equipment and the ability to act as an incident command post, battalion chief vehicles primarily respond to larger or more complex emergencies. These buggies have everything needed to lead and assist in command and control of an incident.
