George Mason was established as a four-year university in 1972 when the governor signed legislation separating it from the University of Virginia. In 1981 the George Mason University’s 21 person security department was reorganized and formed an autonomous law enforcement agency

Today, the George Mason University Police Department has grown to a force of over fifty sworn officers which patrols t

hree campuses. The department is a full service law enforcement agency which has maintained its nationally accredited status since 1991.

The Mason Police are commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America with a special commemorative badge. You will see officers wearing these 250th badges around campus for the remainder of the year.

Officers who will be working in support of the on Independence Day will also be wearing commemorative unit patches. These officers will be supporting The Arlington County Police Department, Pentagon Force Protection Agency, United States Secret Service and other partners in assuring a safe and secure event on the 4th of July.

Everyday on patrol is different and you never know who you will meet when you start your day. Today, two officers from the Netherlands Police paid us a visit as part of their time spent in the US during National Police Week, trading patches and coins and checking out American police vehicles. Safe travels, officers, and enjoy your time in Virginia!

One of our highlights of has been spending it with our community. This week, the Citizens Police Academy participated in Special Ops night learning about Mason Police's tactical training and capabilities. Thank you Moby Dick House of Kabob at Fair Lakes for a great dinner to kick off the night!

We are proud to introduce our first session of the Mason Police Citizens Police Academy made up of a very diverse group of 12 community members who are connected with George Mason University in many different ways. Each of the 10 weeks that we meet, they add valuable input to our policing strategies in keeping Mason safe. Thanks to all of them and also our sponsors providing delicious dinners for each meeting. We couldn't do it without you!

We had a blast providing a safe and secure environment for Mason Day! Even our UAS team provided drone support to keep a watch from the skies.

Did you know? Mason Day came from a University of Virginia tradition. In 1965, as a branch campus of UVA, George Mason College celebrated its first Founders Day (Thomas Jefferson’s birthday) on April 13. Yet the college couldn’t resist honoring George Mason on the very next day, April 14. Just a few years later, the college skipped TJ’s birthday altogether and celebrated only Mason Day on Friday of that week.
