As we celebrate Independence Day, we also mark the beginning of America's 250th year—a milestone that invites us to reflect on the principles that have shaped our nation since 1776.

One of those principles is the right to petition the government.

Long before it was called lobbying, citizens, merchants, veterans, religious leaders, and community advocates petitioned lawmakers, debated public policy, and made their voices heard.

The Founders recognized that representative government depends on an informed and engaged citizenry, ultimately enshrining the right "to petition the Government for a redress of grievances" in the First Amendment.

For 250 years, advocacy has helped shape our nation's history—from expanding civil rights and improving public health to advancing innovation, strengthening communities, and ensuring that diverse voices are heard in the policymaking process.

Professional lobbyists continue this tradition by helping organizations, businesses, nonprofits, and associations communicate expertise to policymakers while operating within ethical and transparent standards.

At the National Institute for Lobbying & Ethics, we are proud to advance professionalism, integrity, and ethical advocacy, values that strengthen both our profession and our democracy.

As America begins its 250th year, we celebrate not only our nation's founding but also the enduring constitutional freedoms that make representative government possible.

Happy Independence Day, and here's to America's next 250 years.

Memorial Day reminds us that the American story has always been carried forward by extraordinary sacrifice.

Today we honor those who gave their lives in service to this nation - and remember the responsibility that comes with the freedoms they defended. 🇺🇸

Testimony doesn’t end when the hearing adjourns—it’s just getting started.

In today’s fast-moving, media-driven landscape, how your message performs outside the room can matter just as much as what’s said inside it.

Join William LaForge for an inside look at how modern congressional testimony is being shaped, delivered, and amplified—and what that means for today’s advocates.

Most organizations say they want “partners”…

…but still treat service providers like vendors.

For professionals who rely on service providers every day, this discussion offers real-world insight into how to maximize those partnerships, avoid common pitfalls, and leverage outside expertise more strategically. It’s an opportunity to rethink how we engage providers—not as vendors, but as true partners—and to walk away with practical ideas that strengthen performance, efficiency, and impact in an ever-changing landscape.

Congressional testimony isn’t just about what’s said in the room anymore—it’s about how it lives beyond it.

Join us on May 20 as William LaForge, author of Testifying Before Congress, breaks down how advocates and lobbyists are adapting to a media-driven hearing environment where soundbites, headlines, and digital amplification shape outcomes.

This session goes beyond the basics to explore how to craft testimony that resonates with lawmakers, staff, media, and the public—simultaneously.
