Today we remember the original Shock and Awe, D-Day, officially known as Operation Overlord. Almost 160,000 allied troops entered Normandy that day, by sea and air. A fact unknown to most is it was Coasties who drove the landing boats, offloading the troops onto the beaches.

A little Memorial Day History, previously known as Decoration Day. The first Decoration Day was held on 1 May 1865 in Charleston SC, when former slaves decorated the graves of approximately 257 Union soldiers at Planter’s Racecourse with flowers to honor the sacrifice the soldiers made. These soldiers died while confederate prisoners.

In March 1868, Col John Logan of IL (Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic) called for May 30th to be recognized as Decoration Day for all Union soldiers.

After the World Wars Decoration Day
was extended to honor all those you made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. In 1968 Congress changed the date to the last Monday in May and in 1971 the name was changed to Memorial Day.
