GOATS AT WORK 🐐🚧

Have you seen our working goat herd at Historic Blenheim yet? Visitors are encouraged to check them out this June as they work to clear invasive plants along the property boundary.

While visiting goats, please remember these rules:

🐶 Keep all pets on leash. It's the law and helps avoid unwanted confrontations.
⚡Watch children closely — goats are protected by an electrified fence.
👋 No petting or feeding goats is allowed. Please abide by posted signs and do not enter the fenced area. Violators may be prosecuted.

In celebration of Chesapeake , we're sharing twelve bioregions of the Chesapeake Bay as they relate to stream macroinvertebrates (aka creek critters). This includes insect larvae, snails, and water beetles.

Differences between bioregions in their natural hydrology, topography, and climate affect the composition of macroinvertebrate communities and how they respond to stream degradation.

It's berry season, and that often means a joyful trip to the farmer's market. But our native trees are also producing great fruit that you can harvest for free: mulberries and serviceberries (Amelanchier spp) are in season now through June.

In Virginia, we have both a native and a non-native invasive mulberry. Our native mulberry is the red mulberry (Morus rubra), but more likely, you'll find a hybridized or white mulberry (Morus alba), which is purplish-black when ripe and tastes similar to raspberries. These fruits often litter sidewalks with blue blotches this time of year.

Serviceberries, pictured here, are found across North America and are known by many names — like shadbush, shadblow, juneberry, and saskatoon — due to the plant's widespread value as a food and medicine. Here in Fairfax, you're likely to find downy serviceberry, Canadian serviceberry, and Allegheny serviceberry in landscaping or around parks. Tastiest when a red to deep purple/blue color, serviceberries taste like a blend of blueberry, strawberry, and almond. They look like blueberries, but are actually more closely related to roses.

Always forage carefully (at your own risk) and make sure you have positive identification. Follow park rules and ethical foraging principles by always leaving enough fruit for birds and other wildlife.
