🎵NOW PLAYING: “Blinding Algae” (Our remix of The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights)
“I can’t breathe until I feel your touch…”🎵
That’s exactly what the fish are saying when toxic algae blooms choke out the oxygen in our streams!
When heavy summer rains hit a freshly fertilized lawn, those extra nutrients wash straight into storm drains. This fuels rapid algae growth that ruins summer water recreation. Check the weather forecast first and never apply yard fertilizer right before a big summer downpour. Let’s keep our water clear!

🌊 Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week is a reminder that protecting the Bay starts right here in our own communities.

This year's theme, *Built by Nature, Protected Together*, celebrates the natural systems that keep our waterways healthy and the people who help protect them. From reducing pollution and planting trees to properly recycling and keeping litter out of storm drains, every action contributes to cleaner local streams and a healthier Chesapeake Bay.

Together, we can help protect the waterways that connect Fairfax County to the Bay.

☀️ What a day at Summer Palooza!

Hundreds of residents came out to enjoy live music, food, Touch-A-Truck activities, local vendors, family fun, and opportunities to connect with County agencies and community organizations. DPWES outreach teams were proud to be part of the event, sharing tips on protecting our waterways, recycling right, preventing sewer backups by only flushing the 4 P's, understanding flood risk, and helping stop the spread of the invasive spotted lanternfly.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booths, asked questions, played games, and learned how small actions can make a big difference in our community.

🎵NOW PLAYING: “Cruel Summer (Pool Version)” Inspired by Taylor Swift
Draining chlorinated pool water or algaecides directly into the street or a storm drain? “I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?” 🎶It really is the worst thing for aquatic life! 🐟❌
Chlorine keeps our pools safe, but it makes local stream life suffer. Keep summer kind to nature. Let your pool water sit and dechlorinate for a few days, then drain it slowly across a grassy area on your property so it can soak safely into the ground. Test your water to ensure there is no chlorine!

☀️ Dry weather has prompted a regional drought watch across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

While our region currently has an adequate water supply, residents and businesses are encouraged to take simple, voluntary steps to conserve water and help protect our shared resources if dry conditions continue.

💧 Easy ways to save water:
• Keep showers under 5 minutes
• Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
• Run full loads of laundry and dishes
• Fix leaking faucets and toilets
• Sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of hosing them down
• Be mindful of outdoor watering

🔥 Drought conditions can also increase fire risk. Use extra caution when grilling, smoking outdoors, or operating equipment that may create sparks.

Every drop counts. Small actions today can help preserve our water resources for tomorrow.

🎵NOW PLAYING: “Storm Drain Sadness” (Our cover of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness)🎵
The real sadness? Washing your car on the driveway sends a toxic mix of soap and oil right down the storm drain and directly into our local creeks untreated. 🌊💔
Let’s change the tune! You can keep our streams happy by washing your vehicle on the lawn where the soil naturally filters the water or taking it to a commercial car wash where wastewater is properly treated. 🧼🛻
