Ag Scholarship Offered
Wanting to give back to the ag community and the school community, the Thomas family has created the Gene and Susan Thomas Agriculture Scholarship to benefit students at Meridian and Fairbury Public Schools.
The family of Gene Thomas family has decided to honor him with a scholarship that would benefit a Meridian or Fairbury student pursuing agriculture as a career. Susan Thomas was a counselor at Fairbury Public Schools for many years and the duo often volunteered at various events and for organizations, including the Bonham Theatre.
The Fairbury Community Foundation will be helping facilitate the scholarship.
The scholarship will be $1,000 per year and applications are available through the guidance department at each school. Applications for this year’s scholarship is due April 15 and can be sent to 422 E Street, Suite 5, Fairbury, NE., 68352.
Selection committee for the scholarship will be a Thomas family member, a member of the Fairbury Community Foundation board, and a representative from Meridian and Fairbury schools.
During the second semester, the check will be administered to the school of the recipient.
Susan Thomas said, “We want to encourage young people to pursue an agricultural career at an early age and work hard. Gene was a hard working, get it all done type of person and really valued education. We want to build our Jefferson County Community and emphasize those traits,” Susan Thomas said.
The decision on the recipient of the scholarship will be made before the end of each school year.
