The Person Who Believed in Me

I recently saw a television program called The Person Who Believed in Me, and it immediately made me think of one person: Dave Lykins.

Years ago, while attending the Dayton Police Academy, I gave a speech about what a role model is. I spoke about Dave because he truly was my role model. Today, I realize he was also the person who believed in me.

In 1992, Dave gave me my start in law enforcement with the Enon Police Department. From there, I was able to advance my career, serving as a bailiff for the Clark County Municipal Court, then as an Intensive Adult Probation Officer, and ultimately retiring from the Dayton Police Department.

Dave had an impressive career of his own. He served as a Battalion Chief with the Fairborn Fire Department, an arson investigator, and later as Chief of Police for the Enon Police Department. But what I remember most is not his titles—it was the faith he had in me.

Dave gave me an opportunity when he didn’t have to. He believed in me, supported me, and helped open doors that changed the course of my life. A big part of who I am today is because someone took a chance on me.

Life is more than luck. You have to believe in yourself, work hard, and earn your success. But it makes all the difference when someone believes in you too.

Dave Lykins passed away a few years ago, but I will never forget what he did for me. I owe so much to him, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity he gave me and the confidence he showed in me.

Thank you, Dave. Your belief in me helped shape the man I became.

Citizens of Fairborn, I want to ask you a simple question:

If I wasn’t spending late nights researching, reviewing documents, filing paperwork, and navigating the legal process, who would be doing it?

If I wasn’t willing to step forward and take the criticism, the attacks, and the pressure that comes with leading this effort, who would be fighting for your voice to be heard?

I’m not doing this for recognition. I’m not doing it for personal gain. I’m doing it because I care about Fairborn and the people who call this city home. I believe the citizens of Fairborn deserve accountability, transparency, and a government that listens to them.

Leading this effort has required countless hours, dedication, and commitment. I chose to take on that responsibility because I believe our community deserves someone willing to stand up and do the work.

And that same work ethic, determination, and commitment to the people is exactly what I will bring to Fairborn City Council in 2027. If elected, I will fight just as hard for the residents of Fairborn as I am fighting today. I will listen, I will show up, I will do the research, and I will put in the time necessary to represent the people of this city.

Whether you agree with me or not, I hope people can respect the effort, the time, and the determination it takes to see this process through.

Well, once again, this is the second attempt to stop us from gathering petition signatures regarding Councilwoman Sylvia Chess.

First it was TJ Chumps, and now Sycamore Grill.

To be clear, Sycamore Grill has absolutely nothing to do with the petition effort. We are simply using a portion of the parking lot with permission to gather signatures. We will not be inside the restaurant, and the business is not affiliated with our petition campaign in any way.

What I find interesting is this: if nothing improper occurred and citizens have the right to circulate petitions, why are there repeated efforts to prevent us from gathering signatures?

We will continue to follow the law, respect private property rights, and provide Fairborn residents with the opportunity to sign if they choose.

The momentum continues. We will not be discouraged, and we look forward to seeing supporters this Friday and Saturday.

Good morning, citizens and taxpayers of Fairborn.

I didn’t get involved in Fairborn because I wanted a title. I got involved because I care about this city and the people who call it home.

Over the last several years, I’ve attended meetings, asked questions, organized community efforts, and brought forward ideas that I believe can help move Fairborn in a positive direction. Just this morning, I met with Parks and Recreation to discuss a QR code park and bike path system that could help connect residents and visitors to the history, parks, trails, and unique stories that make Fairborn special. I shared my ideas, listened to their feedback, and made it clear that if the project moves forward, I’m willing to help in any way I can.

Whether people agree with me or not, they’ll always know where I stand because I’m going to be honest, approachable, and willing to do the work. I believe Fairborn has tremendous potential, but we can’t be afraid to look at things with a fresh set of eyes. We need to preserve what makes our city great while embracing new ideas, improving our parks and public spaces, supporting local businesses, and making sure residents have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

I’m not running for myself. I’m running to represent the people of Fairborn, bring new energy and new ideas to City Hall, and help move our city forward.

Fairborn deserves leaders who listen, show up, and are willing to work together for the good of our community. I look forward to continuing that conversation with all of you

Hello Fairborn citizens, taxpayers, and residents,

Tomorrow, June 1, 2026, our team will once again be out in the community continuing our effort to gather signatures for the recall petition of Fairborn Councilwoman Sylvia Chess.

We will be working throughout the 202 and 203 precincts, speaking with residents, answering questions, and providing information about the petition. If you see us in your neighborhood and would like to learn more, ask questions, review the facts, or sign the petition, please feel free to stop and talk with us.

We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to listen, engage, and participate in the process. Whether you agree or disagree, an informed and involved community is important to the future of Fairborn.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to staying informed and involved in our city. Together, we can ensure every voice is heard.

Hello Citizens of Fairborn,

Let me be clear: this is not about race, gender, or personal attacks. I am advocating for the citizens of Fairborn.

My concern is with the actions and statements of an elected official who was chosen and is compensated to represent the people of our community. When public officials make statements that I believe negatively impact our city, I believe it is important to bring those facts and concerns to the attention of the taxpayers and residents of Fairborn.

This has never been about me. It is about transparency, accountability, and ensuring that the voices of Fairborn’s citizens are heard.

Unfortunately, some have chosen to respond with personal attacks and false accusations rather than addressing the issues being raised. I have even seen the false claim that I was involved in the events of January 6 in Washington, D.C. That claim is completely untrue. I have never been to Washington, D.C., and I had absolutely no involvement in those events.

What makes this issue personal to me is my family’s history in this community. My family came to America from Italy through Ellis Island seeking opportunity and a better life. They worked hard, built businesses, raised families, and contributed to the community that many of us are proud to call home. I still have family members who live in Fairborn today.

Because of that history, I care deeply about this city and the people who live here. When I hear statements that I believe reflect negatively on our community, it feels like a disservice not only to the citizens of Fairborn but also to the generations of families who worked hard to help build it.

I encourage every citizen of Fairborn to do their own homework, review the facts for themselves, and make an informed decision. If, after looking at the information, you believe change is necessary, I hope you will choose to support and sign the petition to remove Councilwoman Sylvia Chess.

The facts matter. The citizens matter. And that is exactly what this effort is about.

To those continuing to spread false allegations, rumors, and completely fabricated statements across pages and comment sections — enough is enough. Anybody and everybody who truly knows me knows exactly where I stand, what I represent, and how I conduct myself.

False narratives and attention-seeking drama will not distract us from the real issues facing this city. Making reckless accusations without facts only damages credibility and shows a lack of integrity.

And one honest question remains: if nothing wrong was done, then why is there such a strong effort to silence people, shut down conversations, and attack anyone asking questions?

We will continue moving forward professionally, respectfully, and focused on the mission at hand. While others choose gossip and division, we will continue choosing facts, accountability, and progress for Fairborn.

To clarify for everyone, the June 6 event at TJ Chumps was simply a scheduling conflict due to the conference room not being available that day.

Please do not direct any negativity toward TJ Chumps or their staff. We appreciate their professionalism and cooperation.

05/28/2026

We also want to make it absolutely clear that we do not condone hateful calls, harassment, or negative behavior toward TJ Chumps, their management, or their employees in any way.

If anyone associated with our efforts is participating in this behavior, or if you know someone who is, we ask that it stop immediately. Local businesses and their staff should not be placed in the middle of political disagreements.

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation, respect, and professionalism moving forward.

I want to clarify something for the citizens of Fairborn regarding the June 6 petition event.

I spoke today with Josh, the manager at TJ Chumps on Dayton Yellow Springs Road, and he advised me that their conference room was not available on June 6, so they would not have been able to host the event regardless.

I also want to make it very clear that no one should direct negativity, backlash, or hateful phone calls toward TJ Chumps or their staff. They were professional and respectful in speaking with me, and this situation should not be taken out on a local business or its employees.

We appreciate their communication and understanding, and we will continue moving forward respectfully and legally with this petition process at another location.
