šŸŖShoveling snow can be a health risk, especially in the fall and spring when temperatures closer to freezing make the snow denser. Remember to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and move only small amounts with each shovel pass.

Good (very) early morning northern Alaska from the night crew! Two very distinct weather patterns are setting up for us through the remainder of the week. Our more western areas will see a low in the Bering send a front racing into the coast, and bringing with it wind, rain, elevated seas, minor coastal impacts, and for some areas further north-snow.

By contrast, quiet weather is setting up across the eastern part of the state for the next few days as an old front departs the area. Downsloping winds off the AK range developing on Friday will help keep most of the precipitation at bay for the Fairbanks area on eastward through the first half of the weekend, before precipitation chances begin to rise.

It's that time of year again, so let's go over some best practices for measuring snow.

First, you'll want a flat, hard surface away from any obstructions that might cover or drop snow on the site. The surface will need to be cleared off regularly in order to more easily measure fresh snow.

When measuring the snow, make sure your tool is held straight up and down. Measure to the nearest tenth of an inch, anything less than a tenth is called a trace. If the snow is uneven (like in the picture) take multiple measurements and find an average.

Melting, settling and drifting can all affect snow totals, so try to take them as close to the end of the snow as you can and take them in undisturbed locations. If you have an idea of when the snow started, let us know. The more specific the better, but it can even be as simple as 'this morning', or 'last night'.

Here is an example. We got some snow at our office in Fairbanks this morning. When it stopped, we went out to measure right away to prevent any melting from the rising sun. Then we took a couple measurements and came to an average of 0.4 inches. Easy!

We look forward to all the snow reports you send us this winter!

The Yukon Delta area is now under a Coastal Flood Advisory. This product replaces the High Surf Advisory they were under previously. Minor coastal flooding is expected as water levels could reach 4 to 6 feet above the normal high tide line Thursday afternoon, before dropping to 2 to 4 feet above normal through the weekend. You can find more information about our hazard products on our webpage: weather.gov/afg.
