TRAINING TO RESCUE OUR OWN
University Fire Department firefighters recently trained on the Denver Drill, a firefighter rescue exercise designed to challenge crews in tight spaces, limited visibility, and difficult working conditions.
The drill requires firefighters to locate, package, lift, and remove a downed firefighter from a confined area—while operating in full structural firefighting PPE and SCBA.
Firefighter rescue skills are built through repetition. Training under realistic conditions helps our crews develop the communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and confidence needed when conditions are at their worst.
We train hard because someday the firefighter who needs rescuing could be one of our own.

Last weekend, Ester Volunteer Fire Department conducted a joint training with Chena Goldstream Fire and Rescue and the University Fire Department. Ester VFD acquired a structure from a gracious community member, and with authorization from the Department of Environmental Compliance, the fire crews were able to practice fire tactics on an actual structure fire with a controlled environment and instructors present. Then the structure was intentionally and safely burned to the ground.
