Chena-Goldstream Firestation Lunch 🚒🍽

Recently, I had the pleasure of having lunch, riding in a brand-new fire engine, and speaking with staff, firefighters, and their families at the Chena-Goldstream Firestation! I have been making it annual event to go to lunch at the Chena-Goldstream station on Chena ridge, and I was very happy for the opportunity to do so again! Connecting with public safety officials and hearing about ongoing needs, concerns, and priorities is so important, and it’s also one of the most fun things I get to do as a Representative!

Thank you to Chief Bracken for helping organize this lunch, and for all the work of the Chena-Goldstream firefighters and their families!

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which rocked our nation to the core and which fundamentally altered the course of history. Every year, on this day, it is so important to take a moment to reflect on the 3,000 casualties of that day and the many more who have been lost in the years that followed.

I was nine when the towers fell, and my mom was pregnant with my sister. I will never forget the fear that my family felt, and that was felt by families all across our nation and the world. My thoughts and reflections are with those families who have experienced loss associated with the events of 9/11 – whether on the day, due to health impacts or injuries sustained in the immediate aftermath, or in the many years of war that came after.

It's odd to think that these events, which were so real to me, have become a page in history that an entire generation now only knows through stories or textbooks. One thing that is hard to describe is the collective desire to come together in the immediate aftermath, and the inspiring acts of courage and service that many communities undertook to rebuild. That resilience and care for our fellow Americans is what sticks with me most, and stands as an enduring testament to what we are capable of as a nation when we work hard and work together toward a common good. May we continue to honor those lost, and never forget that even in our darkest moments as a country, we can still find light.

University Fire Department Hose Cutting 🚨🚒

Recently, our University Fire Station 12 on University Avenue got a much-needed upgrade, including a brand-new gym that will give our firefighters a dedicated space to stay strong and healthy. I was honored to be a part of the hose cutting ceremony alongside other community leaders and Interior Delegation members! Congratulations and thank you to all our Fairbanks firefighters!

Walk to End Overdose for National Overdose Awareness Day

Last Monday, August 31, Fairbanksans came together for International Overdose Awareness Day. The Fairbanks Native Association hosted the annual Walk of Remembrance from Griffin Park to Pioneer Park. I joined Mayor Mindy O’Neall and other community members in remembering all the Alaskans we’ve lost to overdose and the continual challenge to fight back and address these preventable deaths.

Fairbanks Native Association supplied participants with Narcan, also known as Naloxone, which is often administered as a nasal spray that can be given to anyone who is showing signs of an opioid overdose to immediately reverse the overdose in the body. To learn more and to get a free supply of naloxone to have on hand in your car, home, or business, go to: https://www.overdoseday.com/overdose-basics/

Celebrating 25 Years of Helping Alaskans Get Higher Education and Training! 💙💛

This year marked the 25th Anniversary of the Education Trust of Alaska! In March 2000, the Education Trust of Alaska was established with the bipartisan support of the Twenty-First Alaska State Legislature after the US Congress passed Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code in 1996. The Code allowed for the creation of qualified tuition programs, commonly known as “college savings plans,” “529 education savings plans,” and “529 plans.” Section 14.40.802 established what is now called the Education Trust of Alaska within the University of Alaska (UA) to help families save and plan for future education expenses. The Trust funded its first accounts in April 2001.

Since then, the Trust has administered Alaska’s three 529 plans: Alaska 529, the T. Rowe Price 529 Education Savings Plan, and the John Hancock Freedom 529. These tax-advantaged savings plans give families a path to fund education, avoid student loan debt, and qualify for better jobs and more opportunities. Nationally, the Trust manages the assets of more than 300,000 future students.

As someone who benefitted from having an Alaska 529 plan while I got my education at the UA system, I was honored to present a Legislative Citation honoring their 25th anniversary. Congratulations to the Education Trust of Alaska, and here’s to many more years of helping students and families afford higher education!

This year marked the 30th anniversary of Run for the Refuge. The Run for the Refuge started in 1996 in Fairbanks and was organized by the Northern Alaska Environmental Center as a community event celebrating the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and raising awareness about the importance of stewardship of Alaska’s northern lands. The Run was created during a period when national debates about potential oil and gas development in the Arctic Refuge were intensifying. The Northern Center wanted to create a positive, community-centered way for people to express support for the region and engage in conservation efforts.

Roughly ten thousand people have participated in the Run since its inception, and I was honored to be a part of their opening ceremony this year. Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has been gaining National attention again this year. Accordingly, this year the Run for the Refuge included important information on how we can keep our wildlands wild.

Congratulations Nanook Volleyball Team! 🏐💛💙

Recently, Representative Dibert and I had the honor of presenting a citation to the Nanook Volleyball team, celebrating their 2025 co-GNAC Championship and for making the NCAA Division 2 Tournament!

Last year, I had the pleasure of attending a standing-room only home game, and was thrilled to watch the Nanooks defeat the rival Seawolves! As the Representative for West Fairbanks and a UAF alumnus myself, the positive impact of the team is clear, both on and off the court.

Congratulations again on all your hard work and accomplishments and Go Nooks!

Happy 40th Anniversary Denali Industrial Supply! 💙💛

Last week, I had the honor of presenting a citation to Denali Industrial Supply, recognizing and celebrating their 40 years in business! Over the past four decades not only has Denali Industrial Supply been serving Alaskans, but they have become an integral part of our community.

I am grateful for the opportunity to recognize the hard work of the Denali Industrial Supply owners and employees, past and present, and celebrate this essential local business as they enter their 40th year serving Alaska!

Tok Wildfire Updates 🚨🚨

Level 3 evacuations remain in place from Mackenzie Trail to East 5th Street North of the Alaska Highway due to the Mukluk fire in Tok. According to the most recent reports, the fire is estimated to span over 5,000 acres and is about 16% contained. Over 200 firefighters are assigned to the fire and are prioritizing the protection of structures in surrounding areas as well as assessing damage in the burned areas.

For more information about the Mukluk fire and to get updates as they are available, go to the Alaska Wildland Fire Information page here. My heart goes out to the many families and community members who are being impacted by this emergency.

Division of Elections Responds to Questions‼️

Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher sent a letter to legislators earlier today with responses to the questions posed at the July 22 joint hearing regarding the removal of voters from the rolls based on the assumption that they were noncitizens. This comes after multiple requests for further information and calls to restore voting rights that were sent by the House State Affairs Committee, House Judiciary Committee, and a group of 23 bipartisan legislators on a follow-up letter.

The response details the Division’s process. The Department of Elections agreed to send a follow-up letter to all recipients that have not yet responded clarifying what actions recipients need to take to ensure they remain in “active status.” While this is a positive step in the right direction, the ongoing concerns of voters should have been taken into better consideration before taking action. With Alaska so close to an election, there are still potentially massive implications for legal voters being able to cast their ballots.

As it stands currently, voters who were sent the DOE letter to verify citizenship will be allowed to vote in upcoming elections, but may be asked to vote a question ballot at the polls. As always, I encourage you to reach out to your legislator for any questions you may have about your registration. We will also continue to provide updates as we hear more.
