It’s a busy week for the Panthers!

09/26/2026

In 1982, Ewen-Trout Creek took one of the most explosive teams in U.P. basketball history all the way to the Class D state championship game. The Panthers were averaging around 88 points per game, playing fast, pressing, screening, cutting and attacking before the 3-pointer even existed in Michigan high school basketball.

Then they ran into Covert.

What followed was barely recognizable as a state championship game. Covert's John Wilhite scored 38 points and threw down six dunks, while E-TC star Dave Besonen answered with 38 of his own. Eight players scored in double figures as both teams kept running and scoring. Contemporary accounts credit Covert with 11 dunks in the game.

When it finally ended, Covert had survived 105-94 to claim the Class D championship. Ewen-Trout Creek's 94 points remain listed by the MHSAA as the highest score ever by a losing team in a boys basketball state final.

105-94. No 3-point line. In a state championship game.

A tiny school from the Western U.P. going shot-for-shot with Covert on the biggest stage in Michigan.

They didn't bring the trophy back to Ewen-Trout Creek, but they helped produce one of the wildest state championship games Michigan has ever seen.

Covert would see a UP team again, when the Erik Racine-led Hawks of Republic played them during the state semi final in 1990- a game Covert won, 66-53.
