October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This month, Child & Family Service is standing with survivors, raising awareness, and reminding our community that support, healing, and hope are possible.

Inspired by the resilience of the 'a'ali'i plant:
He ‘a‘ali‘i kū makani mai au; ‘a‘ohe makani nāna e kūla‘i.
I am the ‘a‘ali‘i standing in the wind; no wind can push me over.

🪴At CFS, we help survivors build strong foundations through safety planning, advocacy, counseling, shelter support, and compassionate care so healing can take root and hope can grow.

"Why don’t they just leave?”

It’s a question we hear often about domestic violence. But what if we asked a different question:

“What can I do to help them feel safe and supported?”

Leaving an abusive relationship isn’t always simple. Survivors may face fear, financial dependence, threats, isolation, concerns for their children, housing insecurity, or other barriers that can make leaving dangerous or difficult.

💜 We can help by:
• Listening without judgment
• Believing survivors
• Respecting their choices and timing
• Offering practical support and resources
• Avoiding questions that place blame on the survivor

The responsibility for abuse belongs to the person choosing to abuse—not the person experiencing it.

At Child & Family Service, we believe Hope Starts Here. Every survivor deserves safety, support, and the freedom to make choices about their own future.

🕰️One day. 651 people. One powerful reminder.
Domestic violence is happening in Hawai'i communities, and survivors need support.
The Domestic Violence Counts Report shows the demand for domestic violence services in Hawaiʻi during a 24-hour period with participation from 9 of 11 identified DV programs in Hawai’i.

In one day, 651 victims were served:
👩‍👧‍👦205 adults and children received non-residential supportive services like transportation, housing support, legal support, therapy, and more.
🏠446 adults and children found refuge in emergency shelters, transitional housing, hotels, motels, or other housing provided by local programs.

💜The need is real and Child & Family Service is here to help. Through compassionate support, safety resources, counseling, shelter, and advocacy, CFS stands alongside individuals and families as they work toward safety and a brighter future. Together, we can make sure no one has to face it alone.

Domestic violence can take many forms, and some of the most harmful behaviors may leave no physical marks.

Abuse can include:
• Physical violence
• Emotional or psychological abuse
• Sexual abuse
• Financial abuse
• Digital or technological abuse
• Coercive control

At Child & Family Service, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported.
