Paul Waldo Perkins

Paul Waldo Perkins was born on May 23, 1902, to Leonard and Sarah “Eunice” Crandle Perkins. He was the only child born to their union, and the family made their home in Emmett, just east of Sinking Creek.

Paul was remembered as a bright and studious young man. He frequently participated in declamatory events and earned the admiration of his teachers, neighbors, and community. Those who knew him described him as kind hearted, thoughtful, and deeply cherished.

Paul’s life ended far too soon. He passed away at the age of 25. Although no official death certificate exists, contemporary newspaper accounts reported that he died from blood poisoning.
His gravestone features a photograph that reflects his scholarly nature, along with the tender inscription, “OUR BOY.” During a recent workday, several of us—Becky Jerome, Theresa Knackstedt, Susan Small, and I—had the honor of cleaning his stone and helping preserve his memory.

Though Paul’s time on earth was brief, his life reminds us that each day is a blessing, and even short lives can leave a lasting imprint.

Hello all - since we've been currently dealing with storms, I thought I would share this bit of weather history.

Hailstorm and Waterspout – June 11, 1908
Sinking Creek vicinity center of damaging wind and hailstorm.
The heaviest rain and hailstorm ever known in this vicinity came up about one o’clock last Thursday afternoon and continued increasingly for two hours. The storm was local and it’s center was in the vicinity of Sinking Creek Church, one and one-half miles east of Everton. Artie Hudson who lives near the Sinking Creek church gives the following account of the storm.
“The waterfall was 14 inches. Hail fell for two solid hours, as thick as snowflakes and as large as goose eggs. There was much wind with it, 13 window panes were broken out of my house and several large glass were broken in Ira Sharratt’s residence. Fifty trees were uprooted on my farm.
The corn and wheat crops in that immediate vicinity was completely destroyed. The corn was beaten off and washed away. And the heads of wheat being literally threshed from the stalks. Ira Sharratt’s field of pears was beaten into the earth and is a total loss, the few apples left by the ice freeze and the immense peach crop was hailed into the ground.
Old residents say that Sinking Creek was higher than it had been in thirty-five years. The culvert across the Brockway Branch by the railroad in the southeast part of town was washed out and landed against the cement railroad bridge blocking the branch and forcing the water over the tracks. The ballast was washed from under the track for some distance and the entire top of the cement bridge was washed out, delaying passenger train No. 101 about forty minutes. The Holman foot bridge was also washed away. The rain was light at Ash Grove, Lockwood, South Greenfield and Dadeville."

Today Becky and Frank painted the ramp and porch. So far it looks amazing. Can't wait to see the outcome! Much thanks to them for wanting to better the church and cemetery.

Special thanks to the board members and their wives that came out today to tackle a few chores that really needed to be handled before the annual workday. Darryl Knackstedt, Michael Hayes, Susan Small, Becky Jerome and Frank Jerome, you are very much appreciated. Stumps were removed, the drives were bladed, the church was washed and the ADA ramp was power washed to prepare it for painting.

This a labor of love and it doesn't go unnoticed. Especially since Sinking Creek runs on donations and volunteer help.
