FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
9/11/26

EVERGREEN, Ala.—Mayor Stanley Stallworth announced Friday that Gov. Kay Ivey had awarded the city more than half a million dollars in transportation funds to build sidewalks along Ted Bates Road and Sessions Lane to ensure the safety of students walking to class at Reid State Community College.
“We are excited to continue the progress already in motion in our city and the cooperation with the college and its leadership to accomplish the goals that benefit us all,” Stallworth said. “I am grateful for the expertise and dedication of our city team that kept pursuing this critically important project to fruition.”
The $578,480 grant comes from the Federal Transportation Alternatives Set-aside Program requires a local match of 20 percent and will include close coordination with the Alabama Department of Transportation.
“This Alabama TAPS grant highlights the power of our strong partnership with the City of Evergreen,” stated Dr. Coretta Boykin, President, Reid State Community College. “By building safe, accessible sidewalks between our campus and student dormitories, we are prioritizing student safety and creating a more connected, walkable community."
The sidewalks will provide a safe pedestrian route to campus from the college dorms located on Ted Bates Road. Construction on the project will begin in the coming months. The project will construct approximately 2,300 linear feet of new five-foot wide, ADA-compliant concrete sidewalk along Ted Bates Road and Sessions Lane, connecting the Reid State Community College dormitories to the Reid State campus.
Officials said the total estimated project cost is $736,100. City of Evergreen matching funds (with Reid State Community College) total $157,620, with $53,460 anticipated in Fiscal Year 2027 and $104,160 in 2028.
