We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. It was a full day across Harlan County, and we were proud to be part of the celebrations. The parades in Harlan and Evarts were packed with energy, hometown pride, and plenty of familiar faces. Days like today remind us how strong and connected our community truly is.

This evening, we were honored to be invited by Verda Baptist Church to stand by for their fireworks display. We appreciate the trust they place in us, and we’re always glad to support local events that bring families together.

Engine 4 — “Blacksheep” — on scene tonight
We’ll be attaching photos of Blacksheep at the fireworks display below. It’s always good to see our rigs out serving the community, especially on nights filled with celebration and tradition.

At 5:49 PM, West Cloverfork Fire Department was paged by KSP for a brush fire in the Laurel Branch area of Hwy 215, responding to assist Evarts Fire Department.

Engine 4 (Blacksheep) and Engine 2 (Donkey) responded. Upon arrival, crews found the fire advancing quickly up the mountainside. Blacksheep’s deck gun was deployed to cut off the advancing fire and extinguish the main body.

Firefighters then worked the area to ensure remaining hotspots were fully extinguished.

A reminder to our community:
Dry conditions and low humidity have created an elevated fire risk.
No outdoor burning is permitted from 6 AM to 6 PM.

Please use caution and help us prevent wildfires during this period.

At 4:39 PM today, West Cloverfork Fire Department was paged to a structure fire on HWY 38 near the Coxton community.

Engine 4 (Blacksheep), Tanker 1 (Jumbo), and Tanker 2 (Shrek) responded to the scene. Upon arrival, crews found multiple structures involved, and mutual aid from Sunshine Fire Department was requested to help bring the incident under control.

Firefighters utilized a backhoe on scene to spread out hay and materials inside the storage units, allowing crews to reach and extinguish all remaining hot spots.

A huge thank you to Sunshine Fire Department for the assist and strong teamwork.

At 1:39 PM today, West Cloverfork Fire Department responded to a rapidly spreading brush fire near Verda Baptist Church. The fire involved a large kudzu patch located close to several nearby structures, and strong winds caused the flames to advance quickly.

Engine 4 (Blacksheep), Tanker 1 (Jumbo), Tanker 2 (Shrek), and Engine 2 (Donkey) responded to the scene. Upon arrival, crews deployed deck guns from Shrek and Blacksheep, delivering an immediate and effective knockdown on the main body of fire.

Firefighters then utilized hand lines to extinguish remaining hotspots throughout the area. Several smoldering trees and snags were cut down and moved safely into the burned zone to prevent rekindles.

We appreciate the quick work of all responding members and the continued support of our community.

Winter Storm Preparation

Our members have been busy tonight making sure we’re fully prepared for the incoming winter storm. Snow tire chains are being installed on our apparatus, and all hand tools including chainsaws are checked, fueled, and ready in case they’re needed for emergency response or debris removal.

We encourage everyone in our community to take time to prepare as well. Make sure you have essential supplies, check on neighbors who may need assistance, and avoid traveling once road conditions begin to deteriorate.

Your safety matters, and we’re here and ready to respond when the call comes in. Stay safe, Harlan County.

At 1:08 AM this morning, our department responded to a structure fire in the Pounding Mill community to assist our neighbors at Yocum Creek Fire Department.

Tanker 1 (Jumbo) and Tanker 2 (Shrek) responded to support water operations as the structure was fully involved upon arrival.

Moments like these remind us how strong our community truly is. When one area needs help, the others step up without hesitation. That’s the heart of Harlan County neighbors helping neighbors, day or night.

We’re grateful for the continued support from our community and proud to work alongside all surrounding departments whenever the need arises.

Thank you to every firefighter who answered the call in the early hours of the morning. Your commitment helps keep our communities safe.

Mutual Aid Response – West Cloverfork Fire Department

At 6:13 PM, West Cloverfork Fire Department was dispatched for mutual aid to assist Evarts Fire Department on a structure fire in the Middleton Addition area of Evarts.

Our crew responded quickly, with Engine 4 (Blacksheep) and Tanker 2 (Shrek) arriving on scene to support suppression efforts and ensure the safety of everyone involved.

We’re proud to stand beside our neighboring departments whenever the call comes in.

Last night, our fire department gathered for our annual Christmas dinner a time to celebrate friendship, dedication, and the spirit of the season. This year was extra special as we marked our 2nd year of service since being established.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible fire department members for their commitment, courage, and teamwork. Your service makes all the difference.

And to our community thank you for always standing behind us. Your support fuels our mission and keeps us strong.

Here’s to many more years of service, fellowship, and protecting the place we proudly call home.
