Evansville Peace Garden & Labyrinth

Evansville Peace Garden & Labyrinth This is a place of peace & solitude in Evansville, WI. Throughout her life, Denise has walked labyrinths throughout the U.S. & world.

You can walk anytime on your own or join us the first Saturday of summer months, 9am, for walks led by experienced facilitators & accompanied by Harvest Brown & Steve Barber. The Evansville Peace Garden started as the vision of Denise Janssen Eager, who wanted to give something back to the Evansville community for all the wonderful friendships and opportunities given to her and her family. A labyr

inth is a flat, circular path that curves back around itself, leading to a center point and then back again to the entrance. Walkers follow the set path of switchbacks to the center point & then another set path of switchbacks out to the entrance. Labyrinths allow the walker time to pause, reflect and contemplate. With the many active sports that the Evansville park system has to offer, she thought that having a labyrinth in Evansville would offer a welcome alternative for those seeking a less physical, more mindful activity. Sharing her vision, she realized she wasn't alone and a committed group of volunteers began meeting September 2012 with the task of finding the right space and creating the right design. With many parks in Evansville to choose from, the group finally decided Seminary Park nestled between 4th Street & College Drive was the best place because of its underutilized green space with beautiful mature trees combined with the easy accessibility from most other locations throughout Evansville. Guided by John Gishnock of Formecology, LLC, the group then created a distinctive garden, which focuses on passive recreation, meditation, and some good old-fashioned relaxation. For her senior project, Evansville High School student Rachel Otto visualized & created the Children's ABC Garden. Her parents, John & Kim Otto, built the Little Free Children's Library. The entire family continues to lovingly care for the gardens. The labyrinth was dedicated May 7, 2016, World Labyrinth Day with Tajali Tolan leading the first organized walk. The following World Labyrinth Day, May 6, 2017, the Peace Pole was dedicated. During Covid, when Evansville was following lockdown procedures, Dave Collins, from Creekside Place, led yoga on the labyrinth during the summer months. In 2024, the Evansville Lions Club adopted the labyrinth and weedwack it so walkers can easily see the path to safely walk it. In July 2024, the labyrinth began holding first Saturday organized walks led by Rev. Matt Poock, Denise Janssen Eager, Heidi Carvin, and others. Celebrate Evansville Peace Garden & Labyrinth’s 10th Birthday on World Labyrinth Day

The Evansville Peace Garden & Labyrinth will be turning 10-years old and we’re having a party!

Every year on the first Saturday in May, people around the world walk labyrinths for world peace and celebration of the labyrinth experience. This year’s World Labyrinth Day walk is on Saturday, May 2nd at 9am. We will also be celebrating our 10th birthday as we dedicated it on Saturday, May 7th, 2016.

Labyrinths are an ancient tool used across many lands and religions. They are an easy yet powerful way to facilitate unity, prayer, relaxation, meditation, and connection to whatever is important to your life. The winding path will help you to become quiet and reflective. When we quiet our outer world, we have the opportunity to listen to our inner world. Walking the labyrinth invites us to experience our gratitude for life. It can touch our sorrows and release our joys.

Everyone is welcome to join in even if they have never walked a labyrinth before; this is a peaceful practice for all ages, very young to very old. One does not need to practice a faith to walk.

There is no need to RSVP - just show up. The Evansville Peace Garden & Labyrinth is on Seminary Park Apartments campus on College Drive off of W. Church Street. Our celebration and walk will take about 45 minutes. For those who would rather not walk, they can sit on the low wall surrounding the labyrinth, listen to the flowing music, and walk in spirit.

Good morning you gorgeous ray of sunshine!

On this Earth Day, may we devote our lives to teaching these words in the many ways we can:

“Teach the children. We don’t matter so much, but the children do. Show them the daisies and the pale hepatica. Teach them the taste of sassafras and wintergreen. The lives of the blue sailors, mallow, sunbursts, the moccasin-flowers. And the frisky ones-inkberry, lamb’s quarters, blueberries. And the aromatic ones - rosemary, oregano. Give the peppermint to put in their pockets as they go to school. Give them the fields and the woods and the possibility of the world salvaged from the lords of profit. Stand them in the stream, head them upstream, rejoice as they learn to love this green space they live in, its sticks and leaves and then the silent, beautiful blossoms.

Attention is the beginning of devotion.”
