This week, Post 82 Explorers learned about handcuffing and prisoner transportation. Explorers had the opportunity to get hands-on training in handcuffing from the standing, kneeling, and prone positions. Explorers also learned about the transportation of high risk inmates and techniques used to keep everyone safe and secure.

This weekend, VCSO Post 82 Explorers traveled to Gatlinburg, TN to compete at the BSA Winterfest. 45 Law Enforcement Explorer Posts from 17 different states competed against each other in a number of reality-based scenarios. Post 82 drew the Burglary in Progress, Officer Down, Jail Cell Search, Crime Scene/Escape Room, DUI Traffic Stop, Crisis/Hostage Negotiation, Active Shooter, Crash Investigation, and Modified PT/POPAT scenarios. Post 82 Explorers also competed in the laser pistol competition, archery competition, and squeeze box competition. Post 82 won 2nd place 🥈 in Crisis Negotiation and 3rd Place 🥉 in the Modified PT/POPAT physical agility course.

Special thanks to Sheriff Noah Robinson and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office for making it possible for us to attend, along with the Buffalo Trace Council, Scouting America for their support. We learned a lot and had a blast!

Congratulations to all!!

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office held an awards ceremony at the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse. Family, friends, colleagues, and other guests attended to recognize a number of employees.

Yesterday, Explorer Post 82, along with some friends and family members, toured the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office jail. Explorers learned about the history of the jail, what daily operations occur, and how video court has streamlined the court process. Explorers also learned about how mental health, addiction, and religious resources are utilized within the jail to assist those in need. Explorers also toured the booking area, housing units, medical and dental facilities, kitchen, laundry area, and central control. Additionally, Explorers learned about how the new VCSO partnership with Southwest Indiana Recovery and Empowerment (SWIRE) assists those incarcerated with support, structure, and a recovery plan to assist them through their incarceration, release, and beyond.

This evening, Post 82 Explorers learned about crime scene photography, evidence processing, polygraph examinations, and received a tour of the VCSO Criminal Investigations Division. Detective Toopes also explained some of the specialized training that detectives have and how the evidence collected at a crime scene is utilized in criminal proceedings.

Post 82 Explorers had a great time volunteering at the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office Fall Festival Booth this year. Thousands of slap bracelets, junior deputy stickers, and safe kid armbands were handed out throughout the week!

This week, Post 82 Explorers learned about traffic stops, legal authority related to traffic stops, and different techniques to maximize officer safety. Explorers practiced initiating traffic stops on a closed course, using the radio to communicate with dispatch, and also learned about how Deputies regularly check for warrants and license requirements.
