Why Indiana Received an "F" for Public Education
Indiana recently received an "F" grade from the Network for Public Education for its support of public schools. The grade was not a reflection of our students, teachers, or local schools—it was a reflection of decisions made by state policymakers.
The report cited Indiana's expansion of private school vouchers, diversion of taxpayer dollars to private and religious schools, inadequate funding for public education, and policies that make it more difficult to recruit and retain teachers.
While public schools educate the overwhelming majority of Indiana students, Republican lawmakers have continued to prioritize school voucher programs and private school subsidies over investments in neighborhood public schools. As a result, Indiana ranks near the bottom nationally in support for public education.
Indiana's teachers and students deserve better. Instead of taking resources away from public schools, state leaders should focus on fully funding public education, supporting teachers, and ensuring every child has access to a high-quality public school regardless of their ZIP code.
