On September 19, 1942, Evansville sent its first Thunderbolt into the sky. The first P-47 Thunderbolt built at Evansville’s Republic Aviation factory took flight. Nicknamed “The Hoosier Spirit,” it was the first of more than 6,200 P-47s built here during WWII. The P-47 was one of the largest and heaviest single-engine fighters of the war.
From a factory in Evansville to the skies over Europe, these aircrafts were more than fighter planes. They were a powerful reminder of Evansville's hard work and determination to aid in the war efforts.

Class is in session! College students have returned to campus at both the University of Evansville (UE) and the University of Southern Indiana (USI) for another great year. This marks 107 years of providing higher education in Evansville for UE and 61 years doing the same for USI.

UE began in the town of Moores Hill, Indiana in 1854 as Moores Hill College. Prominent Evansville businessman George Clifford led the charge for the college to move to Evansville in 1917. Two years and one name change later, Evansville College opened its doors to students. The building known today as Olmstead Hall was the first structure permanently erected on campus.

USI began as Indiana State University-Evansville, a regional campus, to serve the growing need for higher education in Southern Indiana in 1965. Twenty years later, USI was officially established as an independent university.
