This year, 5 children have died in hot cars nationwide, with 3 incidents reported in the past two days, a tragic reminder that we can all take steps to help prevent hot car deaths. It only takes a few minutes for a car to heat up and become deadly to a child inside. As summer temperatures rise, more kids are at risk. It's never OK to leave a child alone in a car, not even for a minute, and not even with the window cracked or the car running. Heatstroke can happen quickly – silently – and can be deadly. A parked car can heat up fast, even on mild days. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, not even for a minute. Look before you lock.

☀️This amazing weather has us ready to kick off public events season...and what better way to start than with the 🅵🆁🅴🅴 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 | 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 at Wesselman Park this Saturday! 🚒 🚑 🚔

(You might remember this as the "Public Safety Car Show" from years past, and it's back and bigger than ever!)

🗓️WHEN: 5/16 (Sat), 12-3pm
📍WHERE: Wesselman Park, 551 N. Boeke Rd.

👩‍🚒 Come see us and all of our first responder friends (Evansville Fire Department, Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, McCutchanville Fire Department, Air Evac Lifeteam 46 - Evansville, IN to name a few...plus some long-distance attendees from as far away as Indy and Louisville—over 20+ law enforcement agencies total), explore all manner of emergency vehicles and equipment, and chat with the crews about what a career in public safety could look like! 👨‍🚒

🚁 Enjoy live demonstrations, giveaways, food, music and activities for all ages, including things like:
• EPD K9 demonstration at 1:00PM
• Kids foot race with first responders at 2:00PM (ages 11 & under)
• Classic car show lineup
• Evansville Wartime Museum vehicles
• Hands-on helicopter displays
• Food trucks & Kona Ice
• Safe Kids family resource fair with car seat safety checks
• Special appearances by Southern Indiana Ghostbusters and Star Wars Indiana
• And last but certainly not least...meet VCFD Fire K9 Ember and snag one of her trading cards!

🌳Wesselman Woods playground and Nature Preserve will be open as well, and public restrooms are available. Hope to see you there!

May is Safe Kids Month! Safe Kids Month is a national celebration dedicated to inspiring parents to take simple steps that help keep their kids safe as they get ready for summer. Preventable injuries are the number one cause of death among children ages 1-19 in the U.S., and millions more are injured in ways that can affect them for a lifetime.

Throughout the month, experts from our nearly 400 Safe Kids coalitions across the country will work directly with children, families, and caregivers in their communities to provide tips, information, and safety devices.
