World Trade Center (New York City)
• World Trade Center Civilians and Workers: Approximately 2,750 people died inside the Twin Towers and the surrounding complex, including employees from hundreds of different companies. For example, the financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald lost 658 employees.
• New York City Fire Department (FDNY): lost 343 firefighters and members of the fire patrol who rushed into the towers to help people evacuate.
• Port Authority Police Department (PAPD): 37 officers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey died while securing and evacuating the World Trade Center.
• New York City Police Department (NYPD): NYPD lost 23 officers assisting with rescue operations.
The Pentagon (Arlington County, Virginia)
• Pentagon Civilian Employees and Military Personnel: 125 people on the ground inside the Pentagon died when Flight 77 struck the building, including 55 military personnel and civilian defense workers.
Hijacked Airplanes
• American Airlines Flight 11: 92 people died, including passengers, crew, and 5 hijackers, when the plane hit the North Tower.
• United Airlines Flight 175: 65 people died, including passengers, crew, and 5 hijackers, when the plane hit the South Tower.
• American Airlines Flight 77: 64 people died, including passengers, crew, and 5 hijackers, when the plane hit the Pentagon.
• United Airlines Flight 93: 44 people died, including passengers, crew, and 4 hijackers, when the plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back. This total includes one U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officer.
Perpetrators
• Hijackers: 19 members of Al-Qaeda carried out the su***de attacks across the four flights.

How many “Ground Zero” first responders have died since the attack on 9/11
According to data tracked by the federal government and advocacy groups, the second death toll of 9/11 has far surpassed the number of people killed on the day of the attacks, with total deaths from chronic, toxic exposure nearing 10,000 people.
Because multiple federal registries track these numbers differently, the exact death toll depends on the specific first responder agency or tracking program:
Specific Agency Death Tolls
For local agencies, the subsequent death toll has significantly eclipsed their heavy losses on September 11, 2001:
• FDNY (Fire Department of New York): At least 453 firefighters and EMS personnel have died from Ground Zero-related illnesses. This is far higher than the 343 firefighters who perished on 9/11 itself.
• NYPD (New York Police Department): Over 541 police officers have passed away due to post-9/11 toxic health complications.
Federal Compensation & Health Program Tracking
• The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF): Recent indicates that 9,677 individuals (combining first responders, recovery workers, and downtown residents/survivors) have died from certified 9/11-related illnesses. Out of those overall deaths, 5,892 were caused specifically by 9/11-linked cancers.
• World Trade Center Health Program: More than 57,000 cases of cancer have been formally diagnosed and documented among those who spent months breathing in toxic dust, chemicals, and fumes at Ground Zero.
Advocates from organizations and health officials warn that these numbers will continue to rise over the coming decades due to the long latency periods of respiratory diseases and cancers associated with the disaster site.

How many U.S. military personnel have been killed in action since the 9/11 attack ? “War on Terrorism”
Over 7,000 U.S. military personnel have been killed in post-9/11 military operations.
According to data compiled by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Casualties System and tracking initiatives like the Watson Institute's Costs of War Project at Brown University, the breakdown of fatalities across the primary conflict zones includes:
• Operation Iraqi Freedom / New Dawn (Iraq): 4,419 total deaths (including 3,482 officially classified as killed in hostile action).
• Operation Enduring Freedom / Freedom's Sentinel (Afghanistan): 2,458 total deaths (including 1,922 killed in action).
Additional Post 9/11 Combat Losses
Beyond service members, the broader human cost for U.S. personnel deployed in the war on terror includes:
• U.S. Defense Contractors: Over 3,650 civilian contractors have been killed while supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and surrounding territories.
• Suicides Among Veterans: In addition to physical combat deaths, research highlights that at least four times as many active-duty U.S. personnel and post-9/11 war veterans (an estimated 30,000+ individuals) have tragically died by su***de.
