Evanston Police Chief Schenita Stewart was honored to participate in the Chicago Regional Leading Without a Badge Summit at Malcolm X College! This incredible event focuses entirely on elevating, developing, and celebrating the professional, non-sworn heroes in public safety.

Chief Stewart extends her deepest gratitude to all civilian staff. From communications and crime analysis to administration and technology, your dedication keeps departments moving forward.

Without the incredible civilian staff, the mission of law enforcement and public safety would be exponentially more difficult. You are the backbone of departments' operations, and we thank you for everything you do to keep the community safe!

Congratulations to Sergeant Erv DeLeon on his retirement from the Evanston Police Department after 31 years of dedicated service! 🎉

Throughout his career, Erv served in a wide variety of roles and assignments, gaining extensive experience across the department. He was a member of SWAT and TAC and served in Investigations, PST, and OGA. He also spent an incredible 17 years with NORTAF, including his final four years as Assistant Supervisor.

Erv’s commitment to the department extended well beyond his regular assignments. He served as a Field Training Officer, Fi****ms Instructor, Accident Investigator, and Control and Arrest Tactics Instructor, sharing his knowledge and experience with countless officers throughout the years. He also served as both a Training Sergeant and an Investigations Sergeant, taking on leadership roles that allowed him to mentor others and help develop the officers around him.

Throughout his 31 years with EPD, Erv became someone others could rely on for his experience, knowledge, and willingness to help. Whether he was responding to a challenging call, working an investigation, training an officer, or leading a team, Erv consistently brought professionalism and dedication to everything he did.

A career in law enforcement is about much more than the years spent wearing a badge. It is about the relationships built, the people helped, the lessons shared, and the lasting impact left on the department and the community. Erv’s career reflects all of those things, and the many officers and colleagues who had the opportunity to work alongside him are better for having learned from his experience.

Thank you, Erv, for 31 years of service to the Evanston community, the Evanston Police Department, and the men and women of EPD. Thank you for your dedication, leadership, friendship, and for everything you have contributed throughout your career. Your presence and experience will surely be missed.

We wish Erv nothing but the absolute best as he begins this next chapter of retirement. We know for sure there will be lots of family time and golf! ⛳

Our officers had an absolute blast lighting up the crowd at the annual ’Kits, ’Cats and Kids Block Party!

From the explosive sounds of the ETHS and Northwestern marching bands to the mascots and loads of activities, the community spirit in Evanston was unmatched. We loved hanging out, playing games, competing with student-athletes and cheering on this incredible new school year with the best community around!

Shoutout to everyone who came out to kick it with us, it was unforgettable! No one was harmed during this block party, though our officer pride took a hit from losing a few games. Let's carry this massive energy throughout the school year!

Keeping kids safe starts before you even leave the driveway. Know these important Illinois rules:

UNDER AGE 2
Children must ride in a rear-facing child restraint unless they are 40 pounds or more OR 40 inches or more tall.

UNDER AGE 8
Children must be properly secured in an appropriate child restraint system, including a car seat or booster seat.

THE 40-POUND RULE
A child weighing more than 40 pounds may ride in the back seat using only a lap belt if that seating position does not have a combination lap-and-shoulder belt.

BOOSTER SEATS
A booster seat must be used with a lap-and-shoulder belt. Keep using a booster until the vehicle seat belt fits the child properly.

AGES 8–15
Children must be secured in a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt, regardless of whether they are sitting in the front or back seat.

EVERYONE BUCKLES UP
Illinois requires drivers and passengers age 8 and older to wear a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt in both the front and back seats.

NEVER LEAVE A CHILD UNATTENDED IN A CAR
Illinois law prohibits leaving a child 6 years old or younger unattended in a motor vehicle for more than 10 minutes. A child is considered unattended if they are not accompanied by someone age 14 or older, or if the accompanying person is out of sight.

Look who dropped by the station!

We had an incredible visit from two of our esteemed former Chiefs of Police, Chief Ernest Jacobi (1987-1993) and Chief Frank Kaminiski (1996-2006) catching up with our current Chief Schenita Stewart right here at headquarters.

The hallways were filled with great stories, plenty of laughter, and a shared passion for our community. While eras change, the mission remains absolute…a united, unbreakable commitment to keeping Evanston safe, protected, and moving forward together. Old traditions meet new horizons.


Thank you to our former leaders Chiefs Kaminiski and Jacobi for paving the way and continuing to support our family in blue!

On September 26th, Team Evanston is heading to O'Hare International Airport to pull a massive aircraft across the tarmac to raise vital funds and awareness for the incredible athletes of the Special Olympics Illinois! But before we can move that plane, we need your help to clear the runway.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rip currents can occur anywhere on the Great Lakes, given the right surf conditions. Unfortunately, they are not always obvious by looking at the water. Rip currents pull people away from shore. Their speeds can vary from moment to moment, catching even the strongest swimmers off guard.

The City uses a swim flag warning system to provide beachgoers with a clear indication of swimming conditions. Flags are located at each beach on one of the lifeguard chairs, and signage is placed at the beach entrances.

These flags should not be ignored. When red flags are out, swimming is prohibited, and there is a great threat to anyone who enters the water.

The absence of flags does not assure safe waters. Swim bans and advisories may be implemented based on weather conditions such as lightning or high winds, surf conditions such as high waves, or poor water quality. Please be aware of the current swim status when you go to the beach, and follow all instructions from lifeguards.

Whether you’re traveling near any Evanston school, take a moment to refresh these important school traffic safety reminders!

*SLOW DOWN — Follow posted speed limits and be ready for children entering crosswalks.

*WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS & CYCLISTS — Stay alert and follow crossing guard directions.

*STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES — Watch for flashing lights and extended stop arms.

*PARK RESPONSIBLY — Never block crosswalks, driveways, bus stops, or designated school zones.

*BE PATIENT — Give yourself extra time during arrival and dismissal as families adjust to new routines.

Around Foster School, remember:
Ashland Avenue is one-way southbound from Simpson Street to Foster Street during arrival and dismissal. Parents and caregivers should use the designated drop-off/pick-up area on Ashland.
Bus drop-off/pick-up is along the south side of Simpson Street.

No parking on the south side of Simpson between Dewey and Ashland, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. on school days.

Emerson Street is now 25 MPH between Lemar and Asbury.

Let’s work together to make it a fantastic, safe start for all our students. Whether you are driving, biking, or walking today, please remember to keep our streets safe:

***Follow all traffic and school signs
***Slow down in school zones
***Stop completely for school buses with flashing red lights
***Put away distractions and keep your eyes on the crosswalks.
