CABG believes unequivocally that a healthy Evanston is a fully diverse and inclusive Evanston by race and class. Everyone should have an opportunity to make or to preserve their home in every neighborhood. Over the past 35 years, Evanston has been bleeding its low- and moderate-income residents. This has spilled over into significant population declines among people of color, especially Black residents, hit with on all sides with the loss of low-cost rentals and homes through condo conversions and tear downs in the '90s, and the foreclosure crisis in the 2000s. Combined with aggressive downtown high-rise development, Evanston has skewed wealthy and out of reach to middle and low income families.

To that end, the City should not approve new codes without first knowing that policies adopted will not have an unintended negative impact on low-income renters and homeowners, people of color, people with disabilities, and families with children. Experience has shown that a rising tide of development does not lift all boats. It only lifts the yachts of the wealthy.

Oh, and by the way, the City is patting themselves on the back for hearing from 3% of the people about major changes - please share your voice!
