It's time to refresh your emergency car kit! ⚠️

Swap out heavier items for thinner layers, replenish your first aid kit and stock up on fresh batteries and water.

Pro-Tip: Don’t leave plastic water bottles in a scorching trunk for months — swap them out regularly for fresh ones, or grab a few shelf-stable water pouches instead. ⤵️

As we approach the Fourth of July, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to celebrate safely and responsibly.

Before purchasing fireworks, make sure they are permitted where you live. In California, approved consumer fireworks will have the State Fire Marshal “Safe and Sane” seal on the packaging along with safety instructions.

With dry summer conditions, fireworks can quickly become a fire risk. Whenever possible, consider attending a public fireworks display and leave it to the professionals.

Have a fun and safe Fourth of July, Humboldt County!

How safe is your kitchen?

Your kitchen is one of the most common places for household emergencies, but a few simple habits can help prevent them.

Keep flammable items away from the stove, never leave cooking unattended, and clean up grease buildup regularly. Check cords and appliances for damage before use, and make sure outlets are not overloaded. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.

Staying alert in the kitchen helps prevent emergencies before they start.

How safe is the area around your home?

With hot weather expected over the next couple of weeks, now is a good time to check for outdoor hazards that could become bigger problems during extreme heat or an emergency. 🔥

Clear dry vegetation and debris away from your home, make sure pathways and driveways are accessible, secure loose outdoor items, and check that hoses or sprinklers are working if needed. It is also a good time to make sure outdoor pets have shade and plenty of water.

Small steps now can help reduce risks during hot weather and make your home safer if an emergency happens.

Weather may be getting hotter, but rivers are still cold. Don't let rivers fool you this weekend. Cold water is dangerous for swimming. It can cause you to lose control of your breathing and also the muscles you need to swim. Check the water temps to see if it's too cold for swimming. Enjoy your river visit by wearing a life jacket or plan on not swimming.

Warmer weather is here and now is a good time to think about safety and preparedness. ☀

Hot and dry conditions can increase wildfire risk and extreme heat can affect your health. Avoid using equipment that creates sparks during hot or windy weather and never leave grills or outdoor flames unattended. If you are spending time outside, stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and know the signs of heat exhaustion.

Take a few minutes to prepare your home by clearing dry vegetation and debris around structures, checking hoses, and making sure you have emergency alerts turned on before an emergency happens.

A little preparation now can make a big difference during warm weather!
