DYK October is LGBTQ+ History Month? October is a great time to learn about icons and role models from the LGBTQ+ community, and how they've shaped our schools, music, laws, and more! The FAIR Education Act makes sure that California schools aren't forgetting to celebrate the contributions LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities, like the people pictured here.
Image text reads: October is LGBTQ+ History Month. LGBTQ+ people have existed across time and place, throughout human history! “The FAIR Education Act, SB 48, was signed into law on July 14, 2011, and went into effect on January 1, 2012. It amends the California Education Code to include the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful reference to contributions by people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ community in history and social studies curriculum.” (LGBTQ History.org). Happy Juneteenth! Happy Freedom Day! While the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in Confederate-controlled states on January 1, 1863, enslaved people in Texas weren't emancipated until June 19, 1865 (2 and a half years later).

Reproductive Justice is a core motivation behind Teen Council Humboldt's peer education efforts. Teen Council Humboldt acknowledges the mothers of gynecology: Anarcha, Betsey, Lucy, and other unnamed Black girls and women. They were experimented on without their consent and without pain medicine, all under the guise of advancing gynecological medicine.

Under slavery and other systems of oppression, Black people were often subjected to sexual and reproductive violence, separated from their children and partners, and treated as objects.

Reproductive Justice is the framework of the movement in support of our human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities (SisterSong.net).

Our vision is to provide accurate, unbiased, and useful sexual health education; to end ignorance, promote tolerance, and improve communication between teens and the important people in their lives.
