We, the undersigned residents of Humboldt County, urge the Board of Supervisors to immediately prohibit county-funded travel via Avelo Airlines. Avelo Airlines has demonstrated a disturbing willingness to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), assisting deportation efforts that so...

We are back on this page on our long quest to get the new Humboldt DSA back on the socials and internet search. We are in the home stretch of getting Organizing Committee status from National the next milestone on the road to full Chapter status. Thank you so much for your prior work on this Chris!!!

If you are interested in joining Humboldt DSA there is a sign up form here.

The time has come to build a local DSA chapter. DSA members know that solidarity is the answer: to the cruelties of capitalism and fascism, the epidemics of despair and disinformation, the gutting of our social and collective care networks, the climate crisis and ecofascism, the scapegoating of the....

It’s good to get punched in the face sometimes. It wakes you up. All of America is experiencing that feeling right now. The labor movement needs to experience it for ourselves. If we had served our purpose better for the past two generations, things might not have gotten to this point. If unions are so great, we need to organize the next 20 million union members. Otherwise, we are just making speeches without sharing the spoils.
The way to not get burned down next time is to make sure that everyone in the streets is a union member. We better get to work.

Working In These Times is dedicated to providing independent and incisive coverage of the labor movement and struggles for workers' rights.

Apparently, the Eureka City School Board does not share video of its meetings. So, as a Public Service, Humboldt DSA will.

As a Public Service we Present the Most Recent Video of the Board of Education of Eureka City Schools. They do not want you to have access to it, but WE do.

Humboldt DSA Demands Extension and Improvements in County Eviction Moratorium
With Over 12,000 Losing Jobs, There Must be an Extension of the Moratorium and a Longer Pay-Back Period for Affected Tenants

Humboldt County, CA - During March and April over 12,000 claims for unemployment benefits were filed by Humboldt County workers. We have no idea how many new claims have been filed in May. Even though the County is beginning to open up, who believes that we’ll be able to put 12,000 laid-off workers back on the job?
The crisis of loss of income is nowhere near over. Therefore, Humboldt Democratic Socialists of America (Humboldt DSA) demands that the County make the following changes to the current Eviction Moratorium Ordinance.
• The term of the current County Order must be extended past May 31, 2020 at least through and including July 31, 2020.
• The County must suspend the discontinuation or shutoff of water services for residents or businesses for non-payment of water and/or sewer bills. The imposition of fees or penalties for delinquent water and/or sewer bills must be prohibited.
• Tenant must not be deemed in default of rent payment unless Tenant fails to tender full amount of Delayed Payment within 180-days of May 31, 2020, or 180-days of the date upon which an extension of this Order expires whichever is later.
• During the term of this Ordinance no Landlord shall endeavor to raise rent.

In a recent report in the Eureka Times-Standard (May 13, 2020, “Rate of people unable to pay rent flattening in Humboldt County”) property management companies described that they are seeing, “virtually no increase [of failed rent payments] from April to May.” Claims by Landlords and Property Management firms that the problem represents an existential threat to economically destroy them, seem just slightly hyperbolic.
Tenants, however, if hit with big delayed payments in addition to paying current rent obligations will likely face eviction and homelessness.
Humboldt DSA urges the County Board of Supervisors to take immediate action to avoid Landlord attempts to evict from their homes Tenants who have been gravely economically affected by the current pandemic.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States. We believe that working people should run both the economy and society democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few.

Beyond Bernie: a Statement from the DSA National Political Committee
May 12, 2020
Following the withdrawal of Bernie Sanders from the presidential race, our country has lost the only viable Presidential candidate advocating the comprehensive reform we need to address this pandemic head-on. Sanders’s exit leaves Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. His differences with Sanders and the broader left could not be starker, as was recently made clear when he committed to vetoing Medicare for All, Sanders’s signature legislative priority. Biden’s recent, disgraceful embrace of anti-Chinese xenophobia in his general election campaign, and credible allegations against him, are dangerous examples of how corporate Democrats continue to fail at stopping the ugly advance of far-right politics, racism, and misogyny.
The Democratic Socialists of America will not be endorsing Biden. We fully agree with Senator Sanders that taking on the reactionary, racist, and nationalist right wing represented by Donald Trump is imperative for the survival of millions of working-class people across the country and the world. We believe that the only way to beat the radical right once and for all is through a socialist movement that draws millions of disillusioned working-class people, here and abroad, into the political arena. We will continue to welcome the millions of people who supported Bernie’s platform and are looking for a political home.
We also recognize this moment to strategically strengthen our movements and power. We will fight like hell against the Trump agenda by running pressure campaigns, engaging in mutual aid, helping to build strong, democratic unions, building coalitions with those organizing against capitalism, acting in solidarity with immigrants and incarcerated people against deportation and detention, working to protect tenants and unhoused people, organizing to expand voting rights, locations, and the right to vote by mail. We will demand COVID relief that addresses inequality through a lens of reparations, push for an end to sanctions that are killing millions and fuel militarism in many parts of the world, and will back democratic socialist candidates at the grassroots level. That’s because we know that politics does not begin every four years with a national election: when we get organized, we become the agents of the change that will win the better world the working class desires and deserves.

We should have equal justice for ALL tenants in Humboldt County.
