You know you're from Woodford County when a storm rolls through — and before the sun even comes up, your neighbors are already out there with chainsaws, coffee, and helping hands.

We were out there too. And what we saw made us proud.

While our deputies were out on the roads checking on folks and clearing the way, you were checking on each other. Showing up with groceries. Texting to make sure everyone was okay. That's not something you see everywhere.

That's Woodford County.

Did you know scammers are calling Woodford County residents and making it look like the call is coming from the Sheriff's Office?

Before we get into that — a word from Woodford County resident Melissa Guldan, who had a very different kind of request last week:

"Can I donate some money to put my hubby in a holding cell please? He is driving me crazy right now and I could use a quick 24 hour vaca. 🤣 We have been married 21 years and in the last 24 hours... 'Honey, where do we keep the placemats?' 'What drawer are the scissors in?' 'Is the dishwasher clean or dirty?' (It was completely empty... 🤦‍♀️)"

Melissa, we see you. We appreciate you. Unfortunately that's not something we can help with. 😄

But here's what you SHOULD know — if someone calls claiming to be the Sheriff's Office and asks for money to get a family member out of jail:

🚨 Hang up immediately.
🚨 Do NOT send money or share personal information.
🚨 Call us directly at 309-467-2375.

We couldn't have said it better.

A message from Sheriff Matt Smith:
Our hearts go out to everyone in the Washburn area affected by this week's storms. Our deputies were there, and we will continue to be there for you.
As our community begins the cleanup and recovery process, I want to make sure everyone is aware of a serious concern — storm chasers. And I don't mean the weather kind.
After every major storm, scammers move in fast. They go door to door offering repair work, tree removal, and cleanup services — often demanding large cash payments upfront and delivering little or nothing in return. They target good people at their most vulnerable moment.

Please protect yourself and your neighbors:

🚨 Never pay for services upfront in cash.

🚨 Always ask for a written contract and verify licensing.

🚨 Get multiple estimates before agreeing to any work.

🚨 If something feels off — trust that feeling.

If you encounter suspicious contractors or believe you've been targeted by a scam, please report it to the Woodford County Sheriff's Office immediately at
