When the United States kicks off its 2026 FIFA World Cup against Paraguay tonight, the voice calling the action will be a Duck.

John Strong '07, FOX Sports’ lead soccer play-by-play announcer, will broadcast the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) opening match live from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles alongside match analyst Stu Holden. Strong and Holden are the lead broadcast booth for FOX and will be on site for every USMNT fixture this tournament.

In this video, Strong—who is also the school’s 2025 Eric Allen Outstanding Young Alum and a member of its Journalism Advancement Council—reflects on what University of Oregon gave him, what he hopes students carry into their careers, and why he still thinks it's remarkable that someone pays him to watch soccer.

Watch the video and then watch the action: USA vs. Paraguay kicks off at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET on FOX. 🎙️⚽

What does it take to land a role at Sony Music Group straight out of college?

For Madilyne Nguyen-Acosta '21, it came down to three things: authenticity, a strong sense of purpose, and knowing how to take full advantage of every opportunity in front of her.

As a public relations graduate of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, Madi didn't wait for her career to come to her. She studied abroad in Ghana, led career development initiatives as PRSSA chapter president, competed for—and won—a coveted MAIP fellowship, and leaned on SOJC faculty and advisors who invested in her success.

Now, as a diversity, equity, and inclusion specialist at Sony Music Group, she has three tips for students preparing to enter the workforce:

Stay grounded in your why. Be authentic. And take every professional development opportunity you can find—inside school and beyond.

The SOJC's PR program is built to give students that foundation: tangible skills, hands-on experience, and a network of faculty and industry professionals ready to help you launch.

We’re proud to share Ko-Kwel: He Carries a Story—an immersive augmented reality experience created by Snap AR Scholars and nominated for the AWE Auggie Award for Societal Impact.

Snap AR Scholars is a student-led creative agency and research initiative housed within UO's Oregon Reality Lab. Students learn to design, build, and test immersive AR experiences using Snapchat's Lens Studio, with real-world social impact as the goal.

For this project, the team partnered with Dr. Jason Younker, past Chief of the Coquille Indian Tribe, to bring to life a story that survived the 1954 Western Oregon Indian Termination Act—legislation that stripped dozens of tribes of federal recognition, triggering cultural erasure and Indigenous diaspora.

Built for Snap Spectacles, the experience guides users through Coquille ancestral homelands, fostering cultural understanding and a deeper connection to Coquille communities and places. It's a powerful example of how AR can serve as a tool for heritage preservation and Indigenous oral storytelling.
