Eugene, OR. At 12:38pm on 9/3, Eugene Springfield Fire was dispatched to multiple reports of smoke from the roof of a residence on 24th place in South Eugene. ESF units arrived In 3 minutes and assessed there was a working fire on the first floor of the structure with possible extension into the attic. Crews forced access, advanced hose lines for fire extinguishment, and completed a rapid primary search of the immediate fire occupancy and attached garage structure. The fire was placed under control, and an investigation is ongoing. Acknowledgment to bystanders for quickly calling the fire in and EWEB for assisting with securing power on the structure.

Eugene, Oregon, At approximately 2:15 p.m. Eugene Springfield Fire was alerted to a possible fire in a full size Sanipac refuse truck, located at Edison Elementary. Callers reported the contents of the vehicle were smoking. ESF responded with two engines, one ladder truck, and a Battalion chief. Because the hydraulic lift on the truck had failed and crews could not empty the contents for extinguishment, truck crews needed to use circular saws to cut an opening in the top of the truck for access. Crews lowered a high volume rotating nozzle into the trash compartment for extinguishment. Fire crews also covered storm drain openings to prevent runoff from entering the system. Fire crews, Sanipac and school district officials, and a private hazmat contractor will remained on scene to empty the contents of the truck for full extinguishment.

Yet again this morning, we are experiencing a heavy amount of drift smoke in the area from out of District fires. It is very hazy and we are getting multiple calls.

We have resources out in the field checking reports and all reports point to drift smoke so far.

If you see flames/ a defined column of smoke or observe someone burning, please continue to report these activities. General rule: Burning is still not allowed.

Here are some tips from our partners in Waste Prevention. These tips can help you avoid a compost fire on your property.

Keep Your Yard Fire‑Safe This Summer!

Compost, mulch, and bark can heat up fast — and even ignite — when they get too dry or stacked too deep. A few quick habits can prevent fires and protect your home:

• Keep combustibles away from your house (0–5 ft). Use gravel or hardscape, not mulch or compost.
• Maintain defensible space (5–100 ft). Trim plants, clear dead debris, and keep vegetation spaced out.
• Manage pile depth & moisture. Keep mulch 2–4 inches deep, compost small and turned often, and materials slightly moist.
• Never add hot or flammable items. No ashes, coals, fireworks debris, oily rags, or smoking materials in compost or landscaping.
• Watch for warning signs. Move piles at least 30 ft from structures and check for smoke, heat, or unusual odors.

On Red Flag Warning days:
Pause yard work, lightly hydrate mulch near structures, and cover compost piles.

SPRINGFIELD, OR. At 12:42 a.m., Eugene Springfield Fire was dispatched to a reported house fire in the 1100 block of 36th Street in Springfield.

Neighbors calling 911 reported seeing flames extending above a house in the neighborhood but were initially unsure what was burning. A first alarm assignment was dispatched to the incident.

Firefighters arrived in the area and found a single-family residence heavily involved in fire. Crews immediately went to work suppressing the fire while searching the residence for any potential occupants.

The home was found to be unoccupied at the time of the fire. Despite multiple nearby outbuildings being exposed to the fire upon crews’ arrival, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the property of origin and prevent it from spreading to neighboring structures.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Eugene Springfield Fire Marshal’s Office in coordination with Springfield Police.
