Eugene’s newest street signs are catching eyes!

Several streets have recently seen speed limit reductions as part of the City's transportation safety work. Speed reductions are just one of several tools that the City uses to improve safety, and are a cost-effective way to reduce the severity of crashes.

Recent speed limit reductions include:

- Goodpasture Island Road east of Delta Highway from 40mph to 30mph.
- Goodpasture Island Road west of Delta Highway from 40mph to 35mph.
- Green Acres Road went from 35 to 25 mph between Delta Highway and Norkenzie Road.
- Polk Street, Oak Patch Road, Elmira Road and Maple Street all saw the speed limit reduced from 30mph to 25mph.

Next month, we plan to lower speed limits from 35 to 25 mph on River Loop 1 and 2 and on Wilkes Drive.

It's time to know what you are riding. E-bikes are legally bicycles. E-motos are legally motorcycles. That means, if your bike or other electric ride goes faster than 20mph with a throttle, it's NOT allowed on our paths, sidewalks or bike lanes. Unless you have a motorcycle endorsement and your e-moto is registered and has a license plate, then it is illegal to ride everywhere in Eugene except private property. Biking is fun. The City of Eugene is making progress on the Broadway Sidewalks and Paving Project. This project is designed to improve safety for people who walk, drive, take the bus, and to improve the pavement surface which is in deteriorating condition.

Traffic delays can be frustrating, but they are unfortunately inevitable when working on major street improvements. Thank you for your patience when moving through the work zone!

The City only closes lanes when absolutely necessary, and will open Broadway back to two lanes as soon as possible.

Overall, the project is expected to be finished by November. Consider taking an alternate route if you are travelling through the area.

The changes to Broadway support the City’s larger goals by reallocating space to the sidewalks to improve safety and promote walking trips. Encouraging people to walk, bike and take the bus instead of driving enhances the livability of Eugene, particularly as new housing developments increase residential density in the area.

The project is mainly funded by the voter‑approved pavement bond measure and the Riverfront Urban Renewal District. The Broadway Sidewalks and Paving Project is another step toward creating a safer, more accessible and more vibrant urban environment in Eugene.

Join the City of Eugene for the Patterson Street Pilot Project Community Meeting on Wednesday, August 12th from 6pm-7pm at the Spencer View Apartments Community Room (2250 Patterson Street).

The City of Eugene will be testing a new lane configuration on Patterson Street later this year to improve safety as part of the citywide Vision Zero effort. The number of southbound travel lanes will be reduced from two lanes to one lane from 19th Avenue to 24th Avenue. Removing the western travel lane provides space to add on-street parking and a bicycle lane.

This change responds to a fatal crash that occurred on Patterson Street at 22nd Avenue in January 2026. The pilot project will eliminate the crash type that can occur when a pedestrian enters a street with two lanes that travel in the same direction and is struck by a vehicle in the second lane when the first lane stops and the second lane does not.

City staff will give a presentation beginning at 6:00pm, followed by time for community members to share questions or concerns.

Highway 99 is an important street in Eugene, providing access to the airport, neighborhoods, schools, businesses and more. But tragically, too many people have lost their lives on Highway 99 from traffic crashes, making it one of Eugene's highest crash corridors. More is needed to make Highway 99 safe for travel, no matter how you get around. The City of Eugene is looking at how to make Highway 99 safer for everyone. The River Road neighborhood is a great place to live and visit. But the street itself faces many safety and comfort challenges. River Road has seen too many traffic deaths of people walking, biking, and driving, and is one of Eugene's highest crash corridors. Although River Road has many great things like street trees, crosswalks, and bus stops, there are still major safety issues that need to be addressed. The City of Eugene is looking at how to make River Road safer for everyone.
