Happy New Year! We think a great resolution would be reintroducing yourself to the architectural history of Eugene. Driving/walking by landmark properties like the Folger House located in the Friendly Area Neighborhood would be a great place to start. One purpose of Eugene's Historic Preservation program is to recognize culturally significant physical objects located throughout Eugene. When people hear the name Steve Prefontaine they probably think the following: running and Eugene. That's why the Historic Review Board was proud to designate "Pre's Trail" – located in Alton Baker Park – as an Historic City Landmark. Find out about more landmarks located in Eugene by visiting: https://pdd.eugene-or.gov/Maps/HistoricMap

As 2020 comes to a close, we'd like to highlight some of the work Eugene's Historic Review Board (HRB) has been doing. The HRB oversees Eugene’s Historic Preservation program – including historic education and outreach. This past June, the HRB submitted public comment to the University of Oregon – agreeing with the call to dename Deady Hall. The current Covid-19 pandemic has sadly impacted many Class of 2020 in-person commencement ceremonies. Many have shared their high school senior photos through social media as a display of solidarity with those unable to attend a traditional event. Hopefully these photos from the Lane County History Museum documenting local graduations from past decades provide some grins.

From the mid-1840s until the 1950s, fields of blue-flowering flax flourished in the fertile Willamette Valley to support the only flax industry in the United States. The soil and climate were perfect for growing superior flax, and the plants were transformed into lustrous linen yarn and fabrics.

Check out online resources from the Oregon Historical Society's exhibit: Flaxen: From Flax to Linen in the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Reproductions of hand-tinted glass lantern slides from the early 1930s document how flax was grown and processed to make fabric. The slides from the Oregon Historical Society’s Portland Public School (PPS) Collection were shown to schoolchildren to illustrate various Oregon industries and, in this...
