Democratize UO is in solidarity with and their efforts to prevent the second phase of the Knight Campus expansion from harming the University of Oregon Urban Farm. Similar to many campus issues, it’s clear to see how this fight is the result of the way corporate interests have overtaken the UO Administration and governance system — completely disregarding the interests of students, faculty, staff, and the local community. The Urban Farm is a thriving and vibrant hub for students who seek to understand their environment and gain the foundational and life sustaining knowledge of how to grow their own food. We will not let capital construction jeopardize this special space for students and the community. 🍓🥦🥕🍋🫑🍅🥬🌽

Event details:

🗓: Friday, May 6th (TOMORROW)
⏰: 5:30 PM
📍: Urban Farm

“Come celebrate the Urban Farm with an evening of live music, food and activities featuring farm history, testimonials and information about the impacts of Phase II of the Knight Campus expansion. Students, faculty, and community members are all welcome.”

It’s ASUO ( & ) election season and Democratize UO is so excited to be releasing endorsements for the first time ever. With Oregon’s long legislative session approaching early next year, it is pivotal that we elect student leaders who are going to fight for students on campus and help us push for a democratized Board of Trustees system statewide. 📚🐥💥

Democratize UO is happy to endorse Luda Isakharov () and Kavi Shrestha () for ASUO President and Vice President. Additionally, we are endorsing the rest of the slate. We are impressed with Progress UO’s campaign commitments to work towards housing equity on campus, better working conditions for students, non-violent safety responses on campus, among other things. Please visit the page for more details on their efforts and swipe through to see a voter’s guide of candidates. Voting begun today at 8 AM and closes on Thursday (3/31) at 4 PM. Check the link in ’s bio for a direct link to vote! 🗳💯

Full text of statement:
“On February 8th, 2022 the Daily Emerald first reported on the decision by the ASUO Senate and ASUO President Isaiah Boyd to transfer the budget and authority of the EMU out of the ASUO’s Student Incidental Fee budget to the University of Oregon administration. This major development came out of nowhere and was not reported on until the decision was already made. Largely, this was due to the decision being a backroom deal between President Boyd and VP of Student Life Kevin Marbury. Not only did this decision come with zero transparency or public discussion, but it also came as a surprise to even the members of the ASUO Senate who were not properly briefed on the move to remove the EMU from the I-Fee budget until the day the ASUO budget needed to be finalized. With little information and time for discussion, the ASUO Senate passed the I-fee budget without inclusion of the EMU funding.

Attempting to hand the EMU over to the admin is a striking and shocking undermining of student autonomy on this campus and must be strongly condemned. The EMU has historically been a space that has been for the students and by the students. Students have a unique autonomy over this space that we have nowhere else on the campus. It houses some of our most valuable and vulnerable programs that do not always align with the wants or needs of the Administration. Additionally, this decision would have lowered the ASUO Incident Fee budget from $17 million to $9 million – a further deterioration of student power. “

The Oregon Senate Education Committee will be holding a virtual meeting TOMORROW (2/22) at 1 PM to hear testimony on the state’s public university governance systems. Largely, this is a result of the pressure that and other organizations have placed on the legislature to restructure and dismantle the Board of Trustees system to replace it with a democratically elected board structure that consists of students, faculty, staff, and community members. 💯💯💯

Recently, the Senate Education Committee hired consultants who were tasked with commissioning a report reviewing the current Board of Trustees system. Unfortunately, the report is largely dismissive to calls for a democratic board and the true needs of students, faculty, and staff. For example, the report states, “…at one institution there appeared to be an organized effort to promote a different way of selecting board members which would involve election of trustees by the faculty, staff, and students. Such a process does not exist anywhere in the nation, and it ignores the fact that trustees individually and collectively represent Oregon’s citizens and the public good rather than specific constituencies.” This is just one example of the bias and dismissive language of the report. We know that the current board structure does not represent Oregon’s citizens OR the public good. 🤬

Tomorrow, we are asking you all to show up to say: 1) this report is dismissive and bias, 2) a democratic board IS possible, and 3) we need more meaningful engagement from the legislature around restructuring our public university governance systems.

Urgent ACTION ITEM from :

“Students and community members called upon President Micheal Schill and the greater University to publicize its investments. The Board of Trustees called an impromptu public meeting during the middle of the day during midterm week and gave less than 24 hours to submit comments. This is a direct attempt to subvert public accessibility and ignore the demands of the community.”

Join us for a rally at Johnson Hall at 12PM today! Please be sure to wear your masks and physically distance from others. We are in solidarity with the students who have chained themselves to the door of Johnson Hall demanding the disarming (and eventually dismantling) of UOPD, divestment from oil, and for the democratization of the Board of Trustees! We didn’t organize or plan this event, but one of our organizers did speak at it and we very much appreciate that our message for change has resonated with some many people. Bring your friends and let’s keep fighting for a university that works for us, not corporations. 💥

Happy Friday and end of Week 1! As we go into the weekend, let’s not forget that COVID-19 is still a very serious threat. We must take every precaution to stop the spread and keep ourselves, each other, and the community safe. Stay home! Stop partying! Keep your circle tight! 🛑
