Emerald People's Utility District

Emerald People's Utility District We are a not-for-profit, public power utility serving rural customers of Lane County since 1983.

A group of community members started Emerald PUD in 1983 after being frustrated with the poor service and high prices offered by their private utility company. EPUD now has 80 employees and serves more than 21,000 customers. All events and posts submitted to Emerald PUD’s page are subject to public disclosure under applicable law.

⭐️ Meet RYDER BIEHLER⭐️

Ryder is soon to graduate from Cottage Grove High School and will next continue his education at Oregon Institute of Technology. He will study geomatics and work towards a long-term goal of becoming a utility surveyor.

Ryder chose this field because it offers stability and will also allow him to work outdoors. He looks forward to a long career locating and mapping underground and overhead lines, checking property boundaries, and identifying obstacles or hazards. He wants to be part of the team that keeps the lights on and the community safe.

Congratulations, Ryder! 🎉

⭐️ Meet JAY ANDREWS⭐️

Jay is a graduating senior at Mohawk High School and plans to attend Lane Community College after graduating from Mohawk High School in June. He will pursue his career goal of becoming a diesel mechanic. It was his love of vehicles and heavy equipment that inspired Jay to enter this field of study.

Jay hopes to someday work on the vehicles that keep crews moving. From bucket trucks and diesel engines to complex hydraulic and electrical systems, Jay looks forward to becoming a mechanic who can diagnose problems, repair equipment failures, and keep equipment in optimum condition.

Congratulations, Jay! 🎉

⭐️ Meet ELIAS MICHEL⭐️

Elias is currently studying at Oregon State University, where he is pursuing a degree in nuclear engineering with a focus on reactor engineering. Elias is working toward his long‑term goal of becoming a senior reactor operator at a commercial power plant and is committed to building a strong technical foundation through his studies.

Elias chose nuclear engineering because of his interest in large‑scale energy systems and his desire to contribute to innovative solutions that support modern infrastructure needs. He is motivated by the challenge of learning how complex systems operate safely and efficiently, and he values the role engineers play in designing, maintaining, and improving critical energy technologies.

Elias is a two‑time recipient of EPUD’s Ron Davis EmPOWERing Scholarship, which supports students pursuing education in energy‑related fields.

Congratulations, Elias! 🎉

⭐️ Meet LANCE RISDAL⭐️

He's one of five 2026 EmPOWERing Scholarship winners! Each recipient received a scholarship of $5,000 to assist them in their pursuit of a utility industry career.

Lance is graduating senior at Creswell High School. He credits his time in high school for teaching him the importance of helping others. He hopes to pursue a life of service by becoming a humanitarian engineer. Lance chose this career because he knows he finds fulfillment in helping others, and because he is confident that he can meet the demands of the rigorous schooling and training the profession requires.

At Boise University, Lance plans to earn his Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, and ultimately earn his professional engineer license. He also hopes to further his training with an international nonprofit like Engineers without Borders, or a domestic organization like the Army Corps of Engineers. His end goal is to be able to help communities and people in need anywhere in the world.

Congratulations, Lance! 🎉

⭐️ Meet MADELEINE GUNN ⭐️

She's one of five 2026 EmPOWERing Scholarship winners! Each recipient received a scholarship of $5,000 to assist them in their pursuit of a utility industry career.

Madeleine is a sophomore at Oregon Institute of Technology, and is pursuing a career in communications. She has always valued connection with others and considers herself a “people person,” so when she chose communications as her major, she knew it was the right field for her.

Madeleine knows clear and accurate communication is vital for a utility. From building trust with its customers, to keeping employees safe in the field, to providing outage updates during major events, communication plays an important role. Madeleine hopes to someday share her communications knowledge at a public power utility, where she can serve the community with clarity, accuracy, and compassion.

Congratulations, Madeleine! 🎉
