We are planning to prescribe burn (with support from the Alabama Forestry Commission) in the next four weeks.

The areas scheduled for burning are grasslands and pine restoration sites in our Houston and Davis-Clark units.

Please remember to park such that you are not blocking gates, roads, fire lines, or field access.

We ask that you be patient if we need to temporarily close roads or management units with little notice. If you would like more information, feel free to call our office (334-687-4065).

You otter be celebrating !

The Southeast region of the U.S. is part of the native range of the North American river otter. These charismatic and curious creatures are a delight to observe as they dive through water and slide around on land.

North American river otters are apex predators that play a large role in population control for fish and aquatic invertebrates.

Happy 💫

Did you know, most bird species migrate at night? They use the starry night sky to navigate flyways they've evolved to follow for generations! When we at night, we can help them travel safely, protect night skies, and save energy.
A win-win-win💡

As the weather warms up, we will start to see a lot more activity from our ectothermic friends along the wildlife drive. While snakes and alligators are rather quick at moving out of the road, turtles tend to be a little slower. If you are visiting the refuge and come across a turtle crossing the road, it is best practice to give them distance and time to safely cross. If necessary, you can safely pick up most turtles at the back of their shell (not the sides) and move them in the direction they were traveling off the road. Depending on the species, it is best to keep your fingers away from the face as some chomp if they feel threatened.

Shoutout to the Friends of Lake Eufaula for hosting their 19th annual Lake Eufaula clean up this past weekend. On the Houston Unit, 9 volunteers picked up over 40 bags of trash in under 2 hours!! Efforts like these truly make a difference and are beneficial to the critters that call the refuge home. Please remember to 'leave no trace' by packing out everything when visiting the refuge.
