Lookout for Scam Calls...
I received a call earlier today from a gentleman in Indiana. He noted to me that my house in Eudora (and provided me the address) had just received a new "SmartMeter" for electricity. He then made a couple of references to solar energy and asked if I had interest in saving some money by providing some information to him.
I ended the scam call, but wanted to remind everyone of a few things.....as these scammers get more and more of our information, they can sound fairly convincing.
1) No houses in Eudora have received any "Smart Meter" technology.
2) No one from the City of Eudora will contact you for payment information out of the blue for a device, equipment, or services that have not been adequately discussed and shared with you in advance. If you have concerns about someone asking for that information, hang up and dial the City offices directly at 785-542-2153. If it's a legitimate reason, you can easily be reconnected with staff.
3) Do not be fooled by someone who "knows" information about you. Data like your address, phone number, and even email addresses are often readily available on the internet.
4) The City has not and would not contact you from out of state (or even out of country). Be aware of an area code you are unfamiliar with. *Note that area codes and phone numbers can be spoofed - a (785) area code does not legitimize a call.
5) The City Offices are open Monday - Friday 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m ------ rarely is there an emergency big enough that you would have to make a decision or payment in the moment on the phone. Visiting the City offices in person is a great way to confirm the legitimacy of a claim.
6) If you are a victim of this type of a scam or any other incident/fraudulent activity that may be considered a crime, please reach out to the Eudora Police Department.
Stay vigilant, and please share these types of situations with friends and family members who may not be as aware of the ability and reach of scammers.
