Sixth grade is an important transition point in a student’s education. Students are managing greater independence, more challenging coursework and new expectations while building the habits that will carry them into high school.

Chronic absence at this age can be an early sign that a student is struggling academically, socially or personally. An indicator is not a prediction. It is a signal that families and schools have an opportunity to provide support early.

Regular attendance helps students keep pace with their classes, strengthen relationships with teachers and classmates, and remain connected to the activities that make school engaging.

If your student is experiencing an attendance barrier, please contact their school. Together, we can help them regain momentum and remain on the path toward graduation.

Over the next several weeks, Euclid City Schools will share factual information to help our community understand Issue 5, the district’s proposed 6.75-mill continuing operating levy on the November 3 ballot.

The series will explain what is being proposed, why the district is seeking new operating revenue, what the levy would cost property owners and what could be affected without additional revenue.

Issue 5 would generate approximately $6.87 million annually for day-to-day school operations. The estimated cost is $19.67 per month for each $100,000 of property value.

One in four Ohio students is chronically absent, but that number represents more than a statistic. It represents valuable time away from instruction, classmates, teachers and school activities.

Chronic absenteeism means missing at least 10% of the school year, which can be as little as two to three days each month. The absences do not need to be consecutive, and both excused and unexcused absences count toward the total.

We know that every absence has a story. Our goal is to work alongside families, identify barriers and provide support before missed time begins affecting a student’s progress.

There is another busy and exciting week ahead across Euclid Schools! Our Panthers will have several opportunities to learn, connect and compete throughout this week.

Arbor Elementary will hold Picture Day on Tuesday, followed by Memorial Options Center on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, community members are invited to join Superintendent Karen Brown for breakfast at the Euclid Public Library beginning at 8:30 a.m.

On Thursday, all Euclid Schools will participate in Fathers Walk, welcoming fathers and other important male figures to walk students into school. Panther athletics will also be in action throughout the week, with soccer, volleyball, cross-country and football competitions on the schedule.

The week concludes with varsity football returning to Euclid Community Stadium to face the Strongsville Mustangs on Friday at 7 p.m. The Euclid Cross Country Team will also race in the McNulty Invitational in Cleveland Heights. We hope to see plenty of Panther Pride in the stands next week!

Do you know what counts toward chronic absenteeism? The answer may surprise you.

A student is considered chronically absent after missing 10% or more of the school year. That total includes both excused and unexcused time away from school, including illnesses, appointments, vacations and suspensions.

Chronic absenteeism is different from truancy, which is based specifically on unexcused absences. Understanding that difference helps families recognize when missed instructional time is beginning to add up.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Euclid Schools joins our nation in remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the terrorist attacks in New York City, at the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93.

We honor the courage of the first responders, service members and everyday people who acted with extraordinary bravery. We also recognize the families and communities whose lives were forever changed.

September 11 is observed as Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. As we help a new generation understand this important chapter in our nation’s history, may we continue to demonstrate the unity, compassion and service that brought Americans together in the days that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget.
