Etowah Fire Prevention Education Community Outreach Notice

The City of Etowah Fire Department and the Etowah Rural Fire Department proudly provide fire prevention education to schools throughout our community. The educational materials used in these programs are generously donated by our local businesses.

We partner with the National Fire Safety Council (NFSC), which has handled the mailing of donation request letters in previous years. This year, our staff met with a new NFSC representative for our area and discovered that many business addresses and contact details were outdated. As a result, numerous letters were returned as undeliverable due to incorrect addresses or businesses that are no longer in operation.

To address this issue and ensure the success of our 2026 Fire Prevention Education Program, our personnel will be hand-delivering letters and return envelopes to local businesses. During this visit, we will also:

Verify and update your business’s mailing address
Answer any questions you may have
Provide an opportunity to meet our personnel

Once this process is complete, an updated and accurate contact list will be provided to the National Fire Safety Council. Beginning January 2027, the NFSC will resume mailing letters using this updated information.

Please note that all personnel conducting these visits will be in uniform and will arrive in a marked City of Etowah Fire Department or Etowah Rural Fire Department apparatus. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the validity of an individual, please contact us at (423) 263-9044.

Delivery of letters will begin on December 17, 2025, and may take several weeks to complete.

We sincerely appreciate the continued support of our local business community in helping us educate and protect our children through fire prevention education.

Below I have attached a copy of the letter and return envelope.

*Also this is not limited to commercial businesses only, if an individual of the community or elsewhere would like to be placed on the mailing list for the program or would like information on donating to this program feel free to call us.

Etowah Fire Department Receives Pet Oxygen Kits Donation

The City of Etowah Fire Department is proud to announce that we have recently received four pet oxygen kits generously donated by The Mona Pants Foundation.

These kits will be utilized by our K-9 program and will also be available for use during emergency incidents involving community pets. With these specialized kits, our firefighters can now provide a higher level of care to both our working K-9s and any pets affected by fires or other emergencies.

This donation came at no cost to taxpayers. The kits have been placed on our primary apparatus and are also carried with our K-9 units to ensure they are readily available whenever needed.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to The Mona Pants Foundation for their generous support of our department and the community we serve.

Tonight we hosted Life Force at the Etowah Community Center for a training class. Chris Harper FP-C with Life Force taught the Scene Team Helicopter Training class. Members from the City of Etowah Fire Department, Etowah Rescue Squad & Rural Fire Department, Englewood Fire Department, Claxton Community Volunteer Emergency Services, Athens Rural Fire Department, and Meigs County Emergency Services attended with a total of 27 personnel. This training is a valuable resource for a better understanding of locating, establishing, and securing a landing zone in the community. It also provided members a deeper understanding of the hazards as well as the aircraft “anatomy”. LF-1 landed at our station and allowed personnel the opportunity to get a closer look into the cockpit/patient compartment.

The City of Etowah Fire Department and Etowah Rescue Squad & Rural Fire Department are at the Depot handing out goodies to the kids. Also, if you want information on how to become a volunteer firefighter, we have hand outs for that too.

Please hydrate before, during, and after being outside. There is a misting tent set up on the north side of the depot to cool down. We have a first aid station set up.

*4pm EDT update*
Line of thunderstorms is moving through the region. It will be capable of producing winds up to around 70mph which can cause downed trees and powerlines. Anywhere south of Interstate 40 could see damaging winds BUT if you live in the highlighted area near the Tennessee/Georgia state lines you are at the highest risk of damaging winds.

Good news is that this threat won't last for long and once the storms blow through it should be quiet the rest of the evening. Storms should be east of the Appalachian Mountains by 9pm tonight.

05/21/2025

A tornado warning was issued for parts of McMinn County. The warning affects NW McMinn in the area of Niota. Etowah is NOT in the path of this cell. It’s moving NE from Dayton at 40mph. We are monitoring the weather very closely as these storms move through.
