Preliminary Press Release 5/25/2026:

This morning, the Emmet County Sheriff Office along with several assisting agencies had a large presence in the Fort Defiance State Park for an investigation. During our investigation, out of an abundance of caution, we had an exterior perimeter set up around and just to the north of the park. We were able to deploy boots on the ground, with assistance from police K9’s and drones. During the search, we were able to locate our suspect and take him into custody without incident. This incident remains under investigation, with no safety threats for the public.

We would like thank everyone who assisted. A detailed press release will be released in the coming days.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. This seatbelt-focused enforcement campaign will run from May 18-31, 2026.
Seatbelts remain the single best defense against serious injury, and while most Iowans take safety seriously, even one unbuckled fatality is too many. In 2025, 121 people who died in Iowa traffic crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. These unrestrained occupants accounted for 47% of all 2025 traffic fatalities, a tragic number that is entirely preventable.
“No matter the type of vehicle you’re traveling in, where you’re seated, or what type of road you’re driving on, the best way to protect yourself in a crash is to buckle up,” says Brett Tjepkes, Iowa GTSB Bureau Chief. “If this enforcement effort helps people to change their habits and start buckling up consistently, we’ll consider the mission a success.”
All it takes is one click and a few seconds to protect yourself and your loved ones every time you get in the car. Make safety a habit by buckling up in every seat, every time.
GTSB works with city, county, state, and local organizations to develop and implement strategies to reduce death and injury on Iowa roads using federally funded grants.

🚨 Reminder for today 🚨

Unscheduled Outdoor Warning Siren Test Scheduled for April 9
Emmet County Emergency Management and the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an unscheduled test of the county’s outdoor warning siren system on Thursday, April 9th, 2026. Due to issue with pervious test, we may be doing multiple tests throughout the day. We apologize for any convenance this may cause the public.

This test is necessary due to new equipment recently installed in Emmet County Dispatch Center that activates this system. The test will allow officials to confirm the system is functioning properly as the county transitions from the previous siren control system to the newly installed equipment prior to placing the system fully into service.

Residents may hear the outdoor warning sirens during this test in the following locations:
• Estherville
• Gruver
• Wallingford
• Armstrong
• Emmet County Parks

This is only a test, and no action is required by the public.
If inclement weather is forecasted or present, the test will be postponed avoiding confusion with actual weather-related warnings.

Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert individuals who are outdoors to seek additional information and shelter during emergencies, particularly during severe weather events. Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radios, mobile alerts, and local media.
