At USCG Station Saginaw River today, we had the opportunity to train alongside two of our newest Bay City Flotilla Auxiliary members, Aux William Rosenberg and Aux Ethan Heller. Both members have aspirations of joining the active duty ranks of the Coast Guard upon graduation.
Todays training consisted of utilizing the station’s newest SAR platform, the Special Purpose Craft II (SPC-SWII) in waters less than two feet to simulate a shallow water rescue. If you or anyone you know has interest in a career in the Coast Guard, go to GOCoastGuard.com or contact the station directly.

Come visit our station tomorrow from 10am to 2pm to kick off Safe Boaters week! We will be available to talk about boating safety, some of our boarding officers will be available to answer any questions you might have, or just bring your boat down for the Coast Guard Auxiliary to inspect. Bring your families to check out our new boats and come see Coastie the little Auxiliary robot!

It’ll be a great time for everyone.
We are located at the mouth of the river at 2405 Weadock Hwy in Essexville

⚠️Caution⚠️ Yesterday, utilizing a knot called the timber hitch, the crew was able to retrieve a tree approximately 25 feet in length and three to four feet in diameter out of Saginaw River’s shipping channel. With fluctuating river depths and flooding from tributaries as Spring has come, debris is commonly swept off the river banks and flows down river. This poses a significant hazard to navigation especially at night and any other time of poor visibility. We ask that all mariners take caution, drive at a safe speed and keep a sharp lookout for large floating objects in the Saginaw River as well as the Saginaw Bay.

⚠️ CAUTION: Saginaw Bay Ice Fishing

The Bay and River are currently open to commercial vessel traffic, with multiple confirmed voyages over the next few days. Those engaged in ice fishing are reminded that vessel traffic may cause widespread breaks in the ice.

🛟 Safety Tips:

Use the buddy system: NEVER go out on the ice alone. If you choose to go out on the ice alone, stay in an area where other people can see you.

Carry two ice picks or screwdrivers. If you fall through the ice, these instruments can aid in pulling yourself back onto solid ice. They are much more effective than hands alone, since there’s nothing to grip.

Dress in bright colors, wear reflective clothing, patches, or tape; and wear an exposure suit that is waterproof and a personal floatation device. The chances of locating a person in distress are increased when the individual wears bright and reflective clothing.

There’s nothing quite like spending time with family and friends on the water. While boat owners are familiar with their vessels, passengers may not know how to handle emergency situations. For everyone’s safety, take a few moments to ensure guests and children on your boat are familiar with the following:
