Today, June 21, the FIRE DANGER LEVEL FOR MIDDLESEX County REMAINS HIGH. 🔥🔥
Connecticut is experiencing high forest fire danger due to dry conditions and lack of recent rainfall. Increasing drought conditions combined with low humidity and gusty winds create prime conditions for brush fires to start and spread.
Use extreme caution when handling ignition sources—such as matches, ci******es, or grills—as fires will ignite easily from small sparks and can spread quickly under breezy conditions.

Tuesday morning, June 16, 2026, at approximately 7 am, the volunteers of Essex Fire Engine Company # 1 were dispatched by Valley Shore Emergency Communications to the town of Old Lyme for a structure fire.

Due to the time of day, staffing was limited and our members worked with our other mutual aid departments and assisted the Old Lyme Fire Department with water supply and fire ground operations.

We are fortunate to have such great departments to be working alongside day in and day out. Today was a shining example of the strength of the bond in our area. Crews were made up of members from different departments, apparatus were operated by members from different towns, and yet the incident ran seamlessly and we are pleased to report that there were no injuries.

Our members cleared the scene around 9:30. The old Lyme Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause.
