Essex, MA Fire Dept. this morning responded to a gas leak. Arriving emergency personnel, found a residential gas service that had been struck by a contractor. Crews established a safe perimeter, checking residences in area and stood by while the leak secured by National Grid.

Essex Fire Department – New Tanker 1 Delivery

The Essex, MA Fire Dept. is excited to announce the delivery of our new Tanker 1 today. Graciously funded at the Fall 2025 Annual Town Meeting, this replacement vehicle takes the place of our 1992 tanker, which had reached the end of its service life.

The new tanker carries 3,000 gallons of water and is equipped with a 1,500 gallon per minute pump, significantly enhancing our mobile water supply capabilities—especially in areas of town without hydrant coverage. This apparatus represents a major investment in public safety and will support our firefighters for decades to come.

Over the next several weeks, department members will train on the vehicle and install equipment and radios to ensure it is fully prepared before being placed into service.

We extend our sincere thanks to the residents of Essex for their continued support and commitment to ensuring our department has the tools needed to protect our community.

📚 School Is Back in Session — Please Drive Safely

With school back in session here in Essex tomorrow, we’re reminding all residents to stay alert and slow down around crosswalks, bus stops, and school zones. Morning and afternoon traffic will be busier, and our students depend on all of us to keep their routes safe.

Please watch for pedestrians, obey posted speed limits, and give school buses plenty of room as they make frequent stops.

Let’s help our kids start the year safely — and set the tone for a great school year ahead.

The Essex, MA Fire Dept. is proud to offer a Knox Box Program for senior residents in our community.

The Knox HomeBox is mounted near your entry door and securely stores a key to your home. During an emergency, responding firefighters use a department‑controlled master key to open the box and access your home quickly. The box remains locked at all times, and only authorized fire personnel can open it. This simple system ensures fast entry while keeping your home secure, without forcing entry. This saves valuable time and helps prevent damage to your home when seconds matter most.

Through this program, eligible senior residents can receive a Knox Box at no cost. It’s an important safety tool for older adults who may be at higher risk for falls or have limited mobility.
