The Town of Essex Selectboard:

1. Stands firmly against discrimination in all forms, including racial targeting and political violence.

The Town of Essex was awarded a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Formula Grant through the State of Vermont Agency of Natural Resources in the amount of $488,553.

A portion of the grant funding was used to replace existing deteriorated corrugated metal stormwater pipes with infiltration trenches on Logwood Circle. The old stormwater pipes were removed and replaced with perforated HDPE pipes in stone bedding to function as infiltration trenches for phosphorus load reduction. The installation of these trenches will result in approximately 1.56 kg/yr of phosphorus credit. This project was identified in the Town’s Phosphorus Control Plan for the Main Lake Segment of Lake Champlain. The total project cost was $160,890, with the grant covering $124,185 of the total costs.

The Essex Town Office has been receiving inquiries regarding ballots for the General Election being held on November 3, 2026. The State of Vermont will begin mailing ballots to ALL ACTIVE REGISTERED VOTERS between September 21, 2026 and October 1, 2026 to the mailing address on file. Please be sure to check your voter registration status and your address information on the Vermont Voter Portal page on the Vermont Secretary of State’s website.

Voters can return their ballot by mail, deliver it to the Town Office through November 2, or return it at the polls on voting day. There will be a drop box available for ballots delivered after hours. All ballots received by 7pm on November 3 will be counted. Please allow sufficient time if you mail your ballot.

The Town of Essex Has contracted with S.D. Ireland Construction to pave W**d Road in the Town of Essex. Paving operations are expected to take up to three days and are scheduled to commence the week of September 8, 2026. (This date is weather dependent.)
Traffic will be flagger controlled and limited to a single lane. Expect significant delays. Please use an alternate route.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The Town of Essex Water Department will be flushing hydrants throughout the Trowbridge, Lamell, Whitcomb Meadows and Deer Crossing service areas starting Tuesday, 9/8.

Please do not be concerned if you experience discoloration in your water. Allow your faucet to run and water will clear up.

The Town of Essex is excited to announce the internal promotion of Brittany McGregor as the Zoning Administrator & Health Officer. Brittany brings more than two and a half years of experience with the Town of Essex. She has proven to be an asset to the Community Development team, first as an Administrative Assistant and then as a Planning Technician. As Zoning Administrator & Health Officer, Brittany takes on an important role in ensuring the Town administers the land use regulations. She will work closely with property owners, contractors, developers, engineers and the general public in administering technical and procedural requirements.

“I'm excited to continue working with the community in my new role as Zoning Administrator & Health Officer,” said McGregor. “I hope to assist residents with their understanding of our regulations and obtaining their goals. The Community Development team has been wonderful to work with as we serve the needs of Essex."

Ms. McGregor fills a vacancy left by Sharon Kelley, the Town’s former Zoning Administrator and Health Officer, who retired earlier in August after nearly 32 dedicated years with Essex.

“Brittany has proven herself incredibly capable in her past roles with the Town of Essex,” said Town Manager Greg Duggan. “She has worked closely with and learned from Sharon Kelley. I have no doubt Brittany will be a tremendous asset to the Essex community in her new role.”

The Health Department noted a recent case of rabies in a raccoon in the city/town of Essex, Vermont. Since wild animals move and interact with each other, a rabid animal detection means there is circulation of the virus and a risk of rabies from wildlife in the greater town area. All residents are urged to take steps to protect humans and domestic animals from rabies.
If you are bitten by an animal: wash the wound very well with soap and water and contact your health care provider. Follow all their instructions.

If your pet or farm animal was exposed to a wild or stray animal that might have rabies: contact your veterinarian. State law requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated for rabies — even barn cats.
If you see a wild or stray animal acting strangely, or are concerned about a rabies exposure, call the Rabies Hotline (1-800-4-RABIES) or report it to your town’s animal control officer.

Do not touch or pick up wild or stray animals – even baby animals – or try to make them into pets. Doing so can put yourself or your family at risk of exposure through a bite or scratch. You can’t tell if an animal has rabies just by looking at it. Interacting with young wildlife may result in them being orphaned or tested for rabies, which requires humanely euthanizing the animal. So, for their own sake, leave wildlife in the wild.

Rabies is a deadly viral disease of the brain that infects mammals and is fatal to both humans and animals. In Vermont, rabies is most commonly found in wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, bats and woodchucks. Cats, dogs and livestock can also get rabies if they have not been vaccinated. Rabies virus is spread through the bite of an infected animal. Rabies is transmitted when the virus is introduced into a bite wound, open cuts on the skin, or onto mucous membranes like the mouth or eyes.
