The HEP - High School Equivalency Program assists individuals in Rio Arriba County and surrounding areas in obtaining their high school equivalency credential (HSE). For decades, the HEP program at Northern has assisted students across the Northern region of the state to obtain their HSE, allowing many students to pursue a postsecondary education or training, enter military service, and obtain or
upgrade employment. The HEP Program at Northern currently offers 6-week term classes. Enrollment is contingent on space availability and funding. Anyone who:
1. Is from Rio Arriba County or surrounding areas seeking their high school equivalency.
2. Is 16 years of age or older, is not currently attending high school, and has not received a high school diploma.
3. Demonstrates adequate reading comprehension and math skills by successfully passing a pre-assessment test. NORTHERN’S HEP program
provides the following services:
* Classroom instruction & Tutoring
* Instructional materials and books
* HSE testing Registration
* Career and academic advisement
* Transitional services for college, employment and the military
* Social, cultural and educational activities
* Life, job, and career skills classes
* Referral services
* Financial assistance stipend
HSE graduates:
* Have greater self-confidence, are more likely to be employed full-time, and are qualified for greater responsibilities and promotions.
* Accomplish as much in college and technical training as traditional high school graduates.
* Are able to provide a more stable family life.
* Influence the next generation to value education and take school seriously, especially as parents and grandparents.
