Tewa Women United

Tewa Women United A multicultural + multiracial organization, braiding environmental, reproductive, + gender justice in the Tewa homelands
(2)

Tewa Women United (TWU) started in 1989 as a support group for women from the Pueblos of the northern Rio Grande concerned with the traumatic effects of colonization, religious inquisition, and militarization leading to issues such as alcoholism, suicide, domestic/sexual violence and environmental violence. In the safe space we created, we transformed and empowered one another through critical ana

lysis and by embracing and reaffirming our cultural identity. In 2001 we transitioned from an informal, all volunteer group to a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Tewa Women United was incorporated for educational, social and benevolent purposes, specifically for the ending of all forms of violence against Native Women and girls, Mother Earth and to promote peace in New Mexico.

Summer brings more time with friends, new experiences, and social situations that are chances to look out for each other.

Whether we are at a gathering, out in our community, or heading somewhere new, safety is something we can all take part in building by checking in with our friends, staying with people we trust, and having an idea about our boundaries ahead of time.

SPEAK UP FOR SACRED WATERS

From today until Thursday, June 18, people of faith and conscience have a critical chance to shape the future of water protection in the state. Federal rollbacks stripped the Clean Water Act safeguards from up to 95% of streams and 88% of our wetlands. Water is life and this puts all lives in New Mexico at risk - human and more-than-human. In response, our state is writing new rules for our Surface Water Quality Permitting Program and we need your help to pass the strongest rules possible.

The most impactful thing we can do is use our voices to tell the Water Quality Control Commission that our waters must be protected with robust and comprehensive rules that priortize the integrity and health of ecosystems above industry.

PLEASE SPEAK UP: Public comment can be given in person or virtually, June 8 - 18, at 1 pm:

• In person: at the NM State Capitol, Room 309, 490 Old Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe.

• Virtually via Webex

Your public comment goes a long way towards creating strong protections to keep our water clean, our chile green (or red), and our traditions alive.

There’s a lot of talk about masculinity these days.

In the Tewa language, Kwee-wa seng-wa vi tuu signifies the ancestral knowingness found in female and male energy and reminds us that these energies are always woven together.

What does healthy masculinity look and feel like to you? The Healthy Masculinities NM Toolkit was designed to support individuals and groups to explore this question. This comprehensive guide contains readings, workshops, and exercises that help communities reimagine masculinity. It's a great free resource!

We're gearing up for the third and final workshop in our Environmental Justice Community Workshop series.

Plutonium pits are the essential part of nuclear bombs, and the manufacturing process involves hazardous and radioactive materials. During these gatherings, we will break down the significance of the PEIS (Programatic Environmental Impact Statement), current Los Alamos National Laboratory projects, and understand different public participation options.

In this free workshop, we’ll look at how the final LANL Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) relates to the PEIS, and prepare you to make your public comment.

SIGN UP HERE:

From now until July 16, we are in the public comment period for the draft Programatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) on Plutonium Pit Production. This PEIS was released as a result of a lawsuit brought on by Nuclear Watch NM, Savanna River Site Watch, Tri-Valley CAREs, and Gullah/Geechee Sea....

Did you know you can drop by the Española Healing Foods Oasis any time and enjoy the beauty of the garden?

Find a shady spot and take in the good energy that's been planted here by hundreds of people over the past 10 years... see if you can spot some of the native plants growing here, like yucca, chokecherry, beebalm, and globemallow. It's a peaceful, welcoming place in the middle of The City of Española.

To visit the garden:
The EHFO is located behind the Española City Hall, on the slope leading down to Valdez Park. Parking is available at the Española Public Library/Lucero Center lot, or on Vietnam Veterans Memorial Road adjacent to the park. Please come visit!

From the archives... we appreciate this March 2025 article from Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) about our work:

"In TWU’s efforts to support environmental health and climate change adaptability by creating community gardens — such as the Española Healing Foods Oasis — heirloom seed libraries, non-GMO seed exchanges, traditional agriculture, bio and mycoremediation practices, one group that the organization is particularly trying to highlight is its Pueblo Women in Farming circle.

'We are trying to break the stigma by teaching women that it’s OK for them to practice their sovereign right to live off this land as well,' Talavi Cook said. 'The program is especially inspiring to our younger women because when they see other women doing it, it makes them want to do it, too. They had no idea that women could do this on their own.'"

LOUISVILLE — When Nathana Bird chose to follow a passion for community organizing, she knew she would be walking a decidedly different path from that of the rest of her family. And yet, in the end, it was a path that led her right back home.Raised in Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico, but educated some 90 ...
