🏆 Employees of the Month – City of Española 🏆

The City of Española is proud to recognize our Employees of the Month for their extraordinary service during the Riverside Fire emergency:

👏 Juan Granillo, Field Operations Foreman
👏 Carlos Garcia, Equipment Operator
👏 Clarence Maestas, Water Superintendent
👏 Kaleb Charley, Water Foreman
👏 Jerome Espinoza, Water Maintenance Worker

Beginning at 10:30 p.m. and continuing until approximately 4:00 a.m. the following morning, these dedicated employees worked tirelessly under emergency conditions to support fire suppression and containment efforts.

Public Works personnel operated heavy equipment, including loaders, backhoes, and graders, to establish fire lines designed to slow and contain the wildfire's spread. At the same time, Water Department personnel played a critical role by monitoring water wells and storage tanks that supplied water for firefighting operations. Their efforts ensured system stability, maintained adequate water pressure, and supported uninterrupted emergency response operations throughout the incident.

Chief Wickersham and the Española Fire Department would also like to extend their sincere appreciation for their outstanding efforts during the Riverside Fire. When called upon to perform duties beyond their normal responsibilities, each of these employees stepped up without hesitation, demonstrating exceptional dedication, professionalism, and teamwork.

Their willingness to go above and beyond played a vital role in protecting lives and property during a challenging and rapidly evolving emergency.

On behalf of the Española Fire Department and the City of Española, thank you for your hard work, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to our community. Your efforts exemplify the spirit of public service and make Española proud. ❤️🚒

It was an honor for the City of Santa Fe team to host Española Mayor Dennis Tim Salazar and his team. Our discussion focused on the power of partnership and how, by working together, our cities can better serve residents, strengthen communities, and create new opportunities for growth and success. Collaboration is the foundation of a brighter future for us all.

🏗️ Richard Lucero Recreation Center Roof & HVAC Upgrades ❄️🏀

We are excited to share that much-needed improvements are coming to the Richard Lucero Recreation Center! Thanks to funding received during the 2025 New Mexico Legislative Session, we have secured the resources needed to replace the facility's roof and upgrade the gym's cooling system.

🔨 We understand that the timing of the HVAC installation may be inconvenient, as it coincides with the start of summer vacation for many of our youth and families. Unfortunately, due to required finance procedures and the contractor selection process through an RFP (Request for Proposals), the project timeline was dependent on several steps that had to be completed before work could begin.

Once the procurement process was finalized and approved by City Council, we were able to secure an installation date and move forward with these important improvements.

The good news? These short-term inconveniences will lead to long-term benefits, including:

🏠 A new, reliable roof

❄️ Upgrading from an outdated swamp cooler system to modern refrigerated air conditioning in the gym

🌟 A more comfortable and enjoyable facility for all users

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve this important community facility.

Thank you for bearing with us during construction. The end result will be a better recreation center for everyone to enjoy for years to come! 💙

On May 28th, Mayor Dennis Tim Salazar and members of his administration joined United Way of Northern New Mexico's UNITE! convening, bringing together nonprofit organizations and the Future Leaders—a dynamic group of young leaders committed to strengthening our community.

This gathering created an important opportunity for open dialogue, collaboration, and shared problem-solving. Together, we discussed the real challenges facing our families, youth, and communities, while providing city leadership with valuable insight into the issues that impact residents every day.

At United Way of Northern New Mexico, Collective Impact team is dedicated to empowering communities, strengthening nonprofit partnerships, and helping identify solutions that create lasting change. Through conversations like these, we move beyond identifying problems and begin building pathways toward meaningful action.

The willingness of Mayor Salazar, City Manager Mike Ortiz, Fire Chief John Wickersham and Assistant Fire Chief Pablo Montoya, community organizations, and our Future Leaders to come together demonstrates what is possible when we work collectively toward a common goal. By listening, learning, and collaborating, we can better support local nonprofits, address the needs of families, and create opportunities for our community to thrive now and in the future.

Together, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more connected Northern New Mexico
