City of Escondido

City of Escondido The official page for the City of Escondido, California More and more people are making Escondido their "City of Choice."

Settled in a long valley in the coastal mountains of Southern California, Escondido, which means "hidden" in Spanish, lies about 18 miles inland, 100 miles south of Los Angeles and 30 miles northeast of San Diego. Surrounded by avocado and citrus groves, Escondido is a diverse, vibrant community with just the right mix of small town friendliness and big-city buzz. As the heart of San Diego North,

it is one of the few remaining communities where people of all income levels can enjoy the Southern California lifestyle. We offer attractive homes in a wide range of prices, two lakes, several parks, a sports center, golf courses, restaurants, wineries, shopping centers, comprehensive healthcare and the nearby San Diego Zoo Safari Park. In addition, the California Center for the Arts brings world class entertainment to the area along with Queen Califia's Magical Circle, a sculpture garden in Kit Carson Park donated by the late internationally renowned artist Niki de Saint Phalle. In recent years Escondido was named by Money Magazine as the Best Place in the West in which to retire and, at the other end of the spectrum, was named a Kid-Friendly City for our broad range of youth programs. Ladies Home Journal also ranked Escondido number eight among the Top Ten Cities for Government. Established in 1888, the city's rich past brings charm and stability to the community. You can see it in the historic homes of Old Escondido or experience it in the thriving downtown area and the weekly blast to the past, "Cruisin' Grand." Yet integrated with Escondido's treasured heritage is a progressive future, bright and brimming with promise. New jobs, new cultural amenities, new entertainment venues, new choices for residential living and a new vision for Escondido's future, make Escondido a city to watch. During the hike, Ranger Joe will share information about local flora and fauna, and identify plant species along the route. 🪻

📍 Saturday, June 13 | 7 a.m.
🚘 Parking: Cougar Pass Parking Lot (27072 Cougar Pass Rd.)
🚗 Getting There: Road access to the parking lot is mostly paved until the last mile, which is an unpaved, uphill gravel road.

👉 Know Before You Go: Please wear sturdy hiking shoes that are comfortable for uphill terrain. Temperatures on Saturday are expected to reach 85 degrees, so be sure to bring plenty of water, sunblock, a hat, and lightweight clothing.

We hope to see you there!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at last night’s community meeting about the Escondido Ice Sports proposal! Due to high attendance, we’re making a few adjustments to accommodate more community members.

For this Saturday, the presentation will move to the Council Chambers, followed by a proposed project open house with City staff and representatives from The Rinks Foundation under the dome. If the 9 a.m. presentation reaches capacity, a second presentation will be added.

Come share your ideas and learn more about The Rinks Foundation’s proposal to bring a three-sheet community ice facility to Kit Carson Park.

On June 3, 2026, City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Rinks Foundation to explore the project’s feasibility and long-term public benefits. As part of this process, the City is gathering community feedback to help inform future City Council consideration.

📚✨ A New Chapter Begins This August! After serving the community from the temporary location at the mall, the Escondido Public Library is preparing to head home, and we can't wait to welcome you back.

Here's what to expect during the transition:
📦 Saturday, June 27, will be the last day at the mall location. The library will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

📚 Beginning Monday, June 29, library services will continue in the Pioneer Room (247 S. Kalmia St.) while we complete the move back into the Library. Temporary hours will be Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

🚚 Throughout July, staff will be relocating collections, furniture, equipment, and materials back into the renovated facility. During this time, please continue visiting us in the Pioneer Room.

🎉 On August 1, join us as we celebrate the Library's return home with a community ribbon cutting! More details are coming soon.

📖 Then, on August 3, the Escondido Public Library officially reopens seven days a week—including Sundays!

The renovated Library includes shorter shelving for improved visibility and accessibility, covered solar parking, enhanced lighting, refreshed interiors, ADA-accessible restrooms, and a new HVAC system. New spaces include a dedicated Teen Space, café area, communal workspaces, study rooms, and a flexible gathering space for programs and activities.

And, of course, the beloved student tiles and children's murals will still be there to welcome you home.

We know many community members have grown fond of the Library's temporary home at the mall, and we're grateful for your support throughout this transition. Over the next several weeks, staff will be putting the finishing touches on the project and moving everything back into place. We look forward to welcoming you home to the Library this August! ❤️📚
