Love it or hate it, AI has entered the workforce and UPMW is committed to easing some of that uncertainty by exploring how this will impact our own work AND yours! Recently the Association held an AI summit to look at more ways it can be utilized in our work including:

📝Resume and Cover Letter development

🫶Serving customers more efficiently

They even used AI to take notes during each session so we could learn from the ones we couldn’t attend. Thank you for putting together this content for us Michigan Works Association!

Today we join the rest of our nation in remembering and honoring those who gave their lives in active service to this country. Because of them, we have the freedom to find and explore meaningful work and build purposeful lives--something we are uniquely grateful for here at Michigan Works. To those whose work required the ultimate sacrifice--thank you. 🇺🇸

U.P. Michigan Works! service centers are closed to day in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. We will reopen with regular hours tomorrow, Tuesday, May 26th.

Congratulations are in order! 🏆

We were thrilled to learn that the IBEW 906 JATC was recognized with the 2025 Excellence in Training National Award from the Electrical Training Alliance, IBEW, and NECA! The award recognizes outstanding leadership in delivering high-quality training and skill development opportunities for electrical workers. This recognition highlights what is possible when strong industry partners and workforce development organizations work together to invest in local talent, expand opportunity, and strengthen the Upper Peninsula workforce for the future.

Our partnership highlights the power of collaboration in building strong career pathways and strengthening the Upper Peninsula workforce. Together, we have expanded access to high-quality Registered Apprenticeship opportunities that allow individuals to earn-while-they-learn while building rewarding careers in the electrical industry. Over the years, we have supported IBEW 906 and its apprenticeship efforts through nearly $1 million in workforce investments, including Going PRO Talent Fund awards, apprenticeship expansion incentives, and direct apprentice support services. These investments have helped apprentices succeed by providing assistance with tools, work clothing, and other necessities that reduce barriers to training and employment.

The award itself is also VERY impressive because it specifically recognizes training participation and leadership at a level exceeding 75% of total local union membership. That's a major national accomplishment! 🇺🇸

Our partnership reflects a shared commitment to developing local talent, supporting employers, and creating opportunities for individuals and families to build long-term careers right here in the Upper Peninsula. Congratulations again to the IBEW Local 906, and thank you being a great partner and letting us build U.P. talent alongside you!

Yesterday, we hosted a Race to Talent on Mackinac Island where we welcomed visitors from across the state to celebrate employer and apprenticeship success in the U.P. and to expose new companies to the benefits of the apprenticeship model.

We're proud to recognize Les Cheneaux Distillers and Mackinac Straits Health System for their accomplishments developing their own apprenticeship programs, and Northern Wings for their commitment to strengthening our local talent pipeline. Thank you to all who came out to the island to attend! ⛵

Across industries, employers are facing the same challenge: finding reliable skilled talent. Registered Apprenticeships are an effective, proven model to fill talent pipeline needs while giving employees the opportunity to earn while they learn. We are seeing the rapid growth of this model in Michigan! There are currently over 20,000 active Registered Apprenticeship programs in our state, a record high! That includes more than 8,400 apprentices added in just 2024 alone.

Employers across the state are turning to apprenticeships as a workforce solution and we're honored to be a part of it. 💪

Last week, we had the honor of attending the U.P. Junior Achievers Girl's Dream Fair on Michigan Technological University's campus! We saw over 150 female students come through this STEM experience designed to equip them with the skills and mindset to build success in the future.

Students got to explore a variety of booths to learn about different organizations and careers available across the U.P. They also heard about real life successes from inspirational women leaders in our communities, including Meredith LaBeau from Calumet Electronics, Bobbi Wood from ThermoAnalytics, Inc., Robin Meneguzzo from the Keweenaw Community Foundation, and a keynote speech from Meteorologist Jennifer Perez of TV6 & FOX UP.

We were thrilled to support this event and the future of women in STEM. We are excited to keep the momentum going in the future to expose more young people to the great companies, careers, and successes that can be found in the U.P.
